I need a load for 405 grain Woodleigh WC's in a Marlin Guide Gun.

5 of us are shooting MGG 45-70s and find Buffalo Big Bore's 405 load is the best.

A few loads to get us on the right track will be appreciated.

I would start with 50gr of IMR3031.

In my brothers Guide Gun 53gr of IMR3031 chronoed 1840fps.

Garrett's 415gr load chronoed 1734fps.

Rp 300gr SP were the fastest of the 300gr factory loads, they choroned 1887fps.

His favorite load in his Guide Gun was the 350gr Hornady Flat Point over 53 gr of IMR 3031.
That load shot well under one inch at 100 yards.
His Guide Gun was extremely accurate.

Hope this helps.

I have shot a lot of game with Woodleigh bullets in my doubles, and one black bear with one in a 308.

I have recovered several, they all expanded perfectly.

They are one of the best hunting bullets on the Planet, IMHO of course.

After much trial and error, I have settled on 350 grain North Fork
flat point soft nose at 2,100 fps. Penetration is unbeliveable
Reloader #7 is the powder of choice for the 45/70 and it is not
temperature sensitive. Would like to share the load but some
fool might try one of these in a trapdoor springfield. (Bad News) The Woodies are
great bullets but will open a little faster and not penetrate as deep.
Tried both on big hogs.
Depends on what you are hunting. Soft skin North America use
the woodies. DG in Africa or the rest of the world or Big Bears try
the North Forks, you won't be disappointed.

Good Shooting

That's awful hot. 43.5gr yields 1800fps pushing a 405gr Remington out of a Guide Gun.

What is your source of data?

Well, at least have an OK day Smiler

I've got 2 loads for my Marlin 1895 Cowboy 26" tube and while my shooter is a little different than yours they might be helpful.

The MILD one is a 350 Lasercast bullet and 52.5g of Varget for a velocity around 1350-1450 fps as I can't find my documents on the chronograph reading right now. It is mild and fun to shoot all day long by men, women and some bigger teenagers.

The WILD one is a 405 Lasercast bullet and a lot of H322. I won't post how much as someone armchair engineer will tell me that my gun blew up with the load and I just didn't realize it. Velocity is 1950-1985 fps but remember this is a 26" tube. Recoil is stiff and not recommended for women. Very accurate and the big game getter. Should be sufficient for anything we have here in North America and a lot of stuff in Africa.

Hope this helps.

I've used and loved RL 7 in a couple of .223's with good success.

I would be interested in your load that you've developed if you wish to share it by PM.

Tetonka:

I haven't tried RL 7 but I have had incredibly good luck with Accurate 2230 with 400 grain bullets. I use a chronograph to do my load testing and It is the most consistent powder that I have tried in either the 45-70 or 450 Marlin. You may want to give the Barnes Busters a try as well. It's a heck of a bullet.

Email Geoff at Woodleigh, keeping in mind that all Woodleighs are velocity specific so he can tell you exactly where to run your velocity.
