If I ever get a chance, this is how I want to do it, with a Model 71 in .348, open sights and lots of plaid wool.

Many thousands of folks did it that way in the past. Sounds like a winner to me!

I picked up a nice Model 71 quite awhile ago and hunted with it in northern WI for several years. There was something about still hunting through the cedar and tag alder swamps with the rifle that really DID make the hunt more enjoyable. Made a couple of very memorable shots on game with that rifle, usually a fairly quick shot on running game at closer ranges. That rifle surely did thump the critters. Haven't used it in years now...sad really.

Shoot straight, shoot often.

I'm with you all the way..I would want a bolt peep if I could find a 71 with one. I love the .348 and regretfully I have sold everyone I every owned because the price just kept doubling and greed led me astray! pissers

Bill:
Thanks so much for putting up the old film. I could watch films like this one to no end and prefer this era to anything made today.
M-71s are great rifles. I have a pre war deluxe with a bolt peep I will put out at the gun show this weekend as I doubt I will ever use it. When it goes, I'm sure I will kick myself.
Again, thanks. It was a great movie.

I get nostalgic on this subject and go back 60 plus years when I killed my first 4 or 5 or 6 bull elk with the lowly 25-35 Win SRC. all one shot kills, no plaid but shotgun or batwing chaps, Kelly spurs, quirt, old death trap form fitting saddle, wild rag, magua rope, and a half broke bronc mule makes me sit in my comfortable chair and dream about the past,my cowboy dad and uncles, my brother and cousins, all gone now..good memories I would never take for, nor would I take for my way of life growing up!

I grew up on a tobacco farm in Kentucky. Rode a horse to a one room school house, one teacher, 14 kids 1st thru 8th grade. My Dad would take us coon hunting because he had 18 dogs. Beagles for rabbits and the coon dogs for bear and coon. I have been in California for over 50 years now, but I still miss that place.

How true. One handed carry with a m-95 is very uncomfortable due to the box magazine.

The first time I ever picked up a Model 71, it instantly occurred to me that the 71 is the only lever action rifle on earth.

71s are the ugliest lever actions ever made, having that fancy, modern pistol grip and all.
I carry my 95s at port arms, always ready for action. I want power, not "ease of carry".
And you realize that sling swivels were an original option for those who want to carry them comfortably.

I love the Win. 71 and all the rest of the old Win...One of my favorite rifles was the Win. mod. 95 carbine in 30-06, shot 220 gr. corelokts and Noslers in it..was a great saddle gun..I never had a problem with the boxy magazine as I carried it by the grip...

I hate swivels and slings on any rifle..I carry a piece of 1/4 inch rope just in case I have to pack meat and a rifle..

I have seen a lot of great trophys jump and disappear and the guy with a sling just couldn't get it up and going like a hunter who carries his gun at ready, it can be only a quick window of opertunity, cost me a huge elk and a grand cape buffao, so I quit using a sling some 40 or so years ago. Just my personal opine and my option.

you guys got to me...I bought a mod. 71 on AR after reading the Lever Action section on this thread... Roll Eyes

I specifically got a shooter, not a collector, reblued, refinished, but done very well ideed, great saddle gun. being such maybe I will be able to keep this one, the nice ones just keep going up in price..good investment gun, but I wanted a hunter.

Great video.

In my world the ´86 or 71 Winchester is the only models which I would consider guns mader for big game and the big game hunter. NIce to carry, powerfull calibers and a fairly high magasin capacity. They feed and cycle smoothly.
I am again ready to get an ´86 in my gunrack...and it will be a .50EX.
