| I've got very good accuracy with both of these in a 1886. I used Jacketed bullets in each. Hornady in the .33, and Barnes for the .38/56. My .33 is a light wieght Model that has some pitting in the bore. The .38/56 had a specail oder 28 inch barrel, and an excellent bore. Three inch groups at 100 yards with open sites is not hard to do. |

I have valid data only for USRAC/Winchester M1886s. If you want these data, let me know.

| I have an original 33WCF smokeless powder action with new barrel. It is not 100% applicable to the question. But it shoots better than I can hold it and certainly minute of game. I use Beartooth Bullets 235 gr cast flatpoint and the same style cast flat point in 240 gr. Pretty much a bang flop on white tail and probably larger game as well. Lots of moose have been dropped with the 30-30 before we "realized" we need bigger calibers for them. The 33 WCF surpasses the 30-30 by quite a margin. That is a 45-70 case necked down and somewhat tapered. Good luck with the 86. Packy |

| I have shot numerous 2" groups at 100 yrds with my 86 both US and Jap. models. The 475 Turnbull with both the 400 and heavier bullets shoot tioght groups. I could shoot it beter if I had a glass on it., I shot the 475 Turnbull at 300 yrds with iron sights and shot 2, 5 1/2" groups with the 325 grain bullets. It will shoot better than I or most people can.
I tend to use more than enough gun.

Here is an unrepentant plug for Mr. Turnbull's 475 Turnbull conversions. A friend in Darby, Montana, acquired a plain Jane 475 Turnbull with Marble's tang sight on a Miroku M1886. Jimmy and I, plus a friend of mine who regularly shoots 1000 yard black powder matches with a C. Sharps 45-70 took Jimmy's 475 out to an 800 yard range. The other two shooters were regularly hitting armor plate targets at 600 yards and 800 yards with the 475, targets I couldn't see without my Zeiss binocular. Before I witnessed the shooting, I would not have believed a lever action capable of such consistency.

| My 86 will shoot better than I can hold it. I generally shoot 300 grain Hornadys over IMR 3031 at 2100fps. My limiting factor is my eyesight with the opens. Just can't see that well anymore. But the gun shoots great. |

| Mine will shoot into one ragged hole at 50 yds using 300 gr FNGC with 15 grs of Unique and large pistol primers. No filler required.
