The 45/70 is an emotional cartridge. My two cents are that the 405 Rem was very fragile on a 50 yd shot on a broadside elk. penetration was 6 inches, hitting one rib and just getting to a lung. only peices were found. If not for a 338 to the ribs this elk was gone. He needed one more 45/70 to the neck ( all I could see) to drop him. This shot also came apart. I then decided these were good beaver and squirrel loads. I used these bullets cuz the magazines said they were good for elk. I have learned...

Bull.

But at least it was kindof funny. Must be the same magazines Jayco reads.

Anyways, nice humorous post to break up this pissing contest that jayco started.

Has anyone tried Australian made Woodleigh bullets.
They specialise in dangerous game bullets eg for wild ( very ) in Northern Australia.

Can easily be found with a net search if posters are not aware of them.

Hi Robert,

The 400 grain Protected Point Woodleigh's work great in a 458 Winchester loaded to 2,240 fps. They are a "semi-spire" pointed bullet so one could not use them in a tabular magazine. But in a Ruger #1 they should be great in a 45-70.

I used to cast 405 grain bullets out of linotype in Lee dies for my 45-70 which I would fire with SR 4759 and a dacron over powder plug.My favorite bullets come from http://www.castperformance.com that I use in 45 lc and 454 casull in my 20" Bullberry Encore Rifle which when loaded is equal to a factory 45-70 ammo.
