What is the best bore solvent to get a old rifle clean? I have a 1895 Winchester that has a darkish bore. I think it will clean up o.k but, what solvent to use? I was looking into Shiloh creek? any help

There aren't any mysteries, any of them will work, some just require more time than others. I haven't used Shiloh Creek myself but have read good comments on it. In most modern rifles, I rarely brush, just use Butch's Bore Shine (and I really am not sure it's any better than most of the other modern brands, it was just what the Benchrest crowd was using and I found a good buy on a couple of quarts of it, it does work well tho) repetively. Wipe Out is good, but is a problem with leaving residue in lever guns IMO. In addition, I wouldn't bother to buy a can of Wipe Out just to clean one gun. I also have had good results with Blue Wonder. I use Hoppe's #9 as a bore preservative and leave a light coating in the gun if I'm going to put it up for a while. It also cleans while sitting but is very mild and VERY SLOW for normal push patch type cleaning. If you're going to shoot the gun A TOTALLY CLEAN BORE IS NOT NECESSARY IMO, just reasonably clean will do. After all, assume you've got it 100% clean as opposed to 99% (that last 1% is tough to get out), what do you have in the bore after the first shot? On your specific gun I would use a brush, being careful to guide the cleaning rod for all passes both with a patch and a brush on the barrel end. For your rifle, cleaning from the barrel end, I'd prefer a coated road but any of them will do if you're careful. First, I'd push a patch or two wet with a good bore cleaner, let it sit for at least 10 minutes, patch it out, push another wet patch through, let it sit a minute or two and then use a wet with solvent bronze brush for at least 10 passes. Patch it clean and repeat whole process a time or two. Then just go to patches (wet, wait, dry) and see if they come clean. More brushing may or may not help. Be aware that certain cleaners and copper brushes will leave residue EVERY TIME and it will look like your barrel is still dirty when you're just removing copper from the brush. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere. NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR. I have come to understand that in hunting, the goal is not the goal but the process.
