I have a nice 38-55 Win. I can buy..I need to know who has brass, bullets, can 38-55 be made from 30-30 brass. looks to me it could with a pass thru a file trim die, then the 38-55 sizer and maybe a fireform???

Only brass I see is from Starline, and only bullets I see is from Barnes..and they are the old soft points and that's good, but they come in .375 and .377, so do I have to slug the bore? Not interested in lead bullets.

I see Win. sells loaded ammo or rather its cataloged at Grafs and Midway, but is it available.

Some of you 38-55 shooters update me, I have not owned a 38-55 since 1949 and I traded a rawhide rope, a pair of crocket spurs and two worn out pack saddles for it. I liked that gun.

Maybe its not worth the trouble??

Ray, I shoot the 38-55 as well as the 375 Winchester. The Starline brass is great and saves a lot of work using 30-30 brass.
For bullets, I use the slugs made by Les Vollmer...they're the best I've found.
You can select your diameter from .375 to .379 and your weight from 200 to 255. He makes a great 38-55 slugging kit is you're going to shoot cast.

I have a 94 Winchester Cheif Crazyhorse Commerative in .38-55.

Got my brass originally from Winchester.

The bullets I have had the best accuracy with/success with are Barnes Originals in .377 diameter.

It seemds like in my research Winchester went with the .377 bore diameter because that was what the original rifles had.

Don't know if that will help any.

Hello Ray,

If your '94 is an older original the groove diameter will almost certainly be .377-.379".

With that said, I have had great luck with Hawk jacketed bullets as small as .375" in both my '94 .38-55 and '95 .38-72, as well as their .377" flat points. Not cheap, but they do work well. hawkbullets.com

That .38-55 '94 is one of my most accurate iron sight rifles, I love it!

Yes. Slug your bore. .38-55 bores vary on the new as well as the Old.

I, too, have a Chief Crazy Horse rifle. 377 Barnes original and . 379 cast work well.

I use all Winchester brass but it may be out of production cycle right now.

Also be aware that starline makes 2 lengths of 38-55 brass. A shorter version that is .375 winchester length and a longer version for the old winchesters. Some of the newer guns use the short brass. I don't know what length the new ones take that are in production now. I have a 94 that was made before FN took over and have used short cases in it. Never tried the long ones to see if they work. In a pinch you could also use .375 winchester cases.

I have never slugged mine but I found out early on that it liked the .377 diameter bullets than it did the .375 diameter bullets.

I have some .380 diameter cast bullets but have never tried them.

Thank You for the info.

Pegleg, Crocket Spurs were a dime a dozen back then, still wish I had them today..In fact I do have a pair and they would fetch me $2500. except they belonged to Tul Newton of the Newton Boys fame (even made a movie on them and I have that taped) Tul gave them to me, he was a cowboy that worked on many of the Big Bend Ranches in Texas and died some years ago in the rest home at Alpine..He held the horses when the brothers did the last train robbery ever. He also went into Mexico every year for a week or so, where the money or gold was hidden, turned it into pesos, came back and turned the pesos into American money and bought himself a new PU and horse trailer..I think he also went and got enough on his last trip to pay for his rest home expense and his funeral..He was a fine gentleman and a famous figure in the Alpine area, I thought the world of him. Also a real sho nuff cowboy.

You can buy Starline brass for the 38-55 at Midway in 2 different lengths for around $27 per 50 pieces. I just bought 200 rounds to make 375 Winchester ammo out of.

Glad to hear you think Starline brass is good, Smokin Joe. That's all I could find for the .45-70 but for some reason had never heard of it before.

old original is probably gonna want more like .380 to shoot well.
38-55 brass comes in a couple of different lengths.
Starline is longer than Winchester.

depending on the age of the rifle BP and cast would be the appropriate load, double check it's age and what the barrel says.

I buy all my 38-40 brass from Starline, its thicker than the WW or Rem stuff and last much longer..Good stuff and I load it with 180 Hawk bulletrs..Hawk bullets work great in the slow and old Win. calibers, best game bullet out there, but not so good in my 7x57, 338, 30-06 as they shed the jackets every time, even with the heavy jackets per caliber that they offer..
