Pop,
I simply can not fathom ANYONE not having and caressing a 444 from Marlin.

You ought to be ashamed to even ask the question!

I've got a few now and I can not imagine life with out one!

You'd better sit down reflect on your lonely life:
with out a 444.

Regards
mike

I do believe Win has quit making this model. I read a test report comparing Marlin accuracy and this model...by..fractions the Win won!

Depending on the price you paid or the price you are considering paying -NONE OF MY BUSINESS- is your call.

I suggest studying as many gun sites as you can.

Info collected will help you build a foundation upon which your decision can be made.

I know someone who has one and he has asked to fire my Marlin 444SS. He indicated that the Marlin kicked substantially less.

As far as accuracy, at 50 yds, my Marlin is a one hole shooter. It prints very tight groups at 100 yds.

I have never owned any Winchester 94 that came close to groups the Marlin is producing. Mine is a 1980 or 1981 production rifle.

Cheers and Good shooting

PoP:

Congrats.!! I have never really seen a Marlin 444 that was not a shooter and a half.

All have been accurate unless someone was fiddling with loads they should not have been. I tried a 44 Mag rifle in a Marlin and 3 to 4 inch groups at 50 yds were the best it ever got. The 444 is the direct opposite.

I need to start my 444 Blue Dot Load Testing.

Cheers and Good shooting

Pop,
I really like Reloader#7 in the 444, 38-55, 45/70, 30-30. Very accurate for me, and, as mentioned here, for lighter 'plinking loads', Blue Dot. Getcher urself a jug of each and you'll be a happy camper!
The straight walled 444 case is one of the most under rated cartridges ever in my book, and like the 38-55, seems to be one of those case/caliber combinations that just shoots! Lots of bullets available, cast and jacketed, and IMHO will stop anything on the planet with proper placement.
I'm envious of you with the Ballard barrel, nevertheless my slower twist 22" microgroove seems to shoot everything I put down the pipe.
Enjoy!
