I have a new, Marlin 336 SS 30/30.
It is not one of the "new models" designed with different barrel lengths to obtain the most from the now , not so new , Hornady ammo.

Living in Australia, we have not yet been advised as to when this new ammo will be available.

Presumably this is due to the demand in the USA and Canada.

How are supplies going there now?

Also, as my 336 is not specifically barrelled to obtain the most from this new ammo, will its performance be degraded in my brand new, but as yet unused Marlin 336.

Now that the hype over the new ammunition has settled down, have the real world tests shown what the ammo is compable of in both the new Marlins developed with the new ammo in mind, and the earlier lever actions?

At this risk of apppearing selfish, my interest is confined to the 30/30 calibre.

If you go here: http://www.marlinowners.com/board/index.php and post your question you will get a lot more response I think. Quite a few of your fellow Aussie's belong & post to MarlinOwners.com. Another place for info is Leverguns: http://leverguns.sixgunner.com/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=2 I'm not trying to knock this fine forum but I've been posting almost 3 years on these two others & they get a lot more activity. If I understand your post & question directly the bottom line is how this newer ammo will work in your 1:10" Microgroove® 336SS. At Marlinowners two very reliable persons to ask are: Tom Ray (who works for Marlin®) and Gunjunkie.

I compared the hornady to some name brand standard ammno in a Marlin 336SC 30/30 made in 1949 out to 300 yds. I was quite impressed with its performance. I preceived more recoil and it was quite a bit more accurate and flater shooting. I have reloaded for many years but was so impressed with the Hornady that I do not plan to reload for the 30/30. Try it.
Hope it helps
Frank

OoKay, what's wrong with Marlins now. Smiler
Marlin held hands with Hornady on the new ammo and now they need new barrels ??

If you just mean "longer", well that's always been an improvement with most ammo, but then you don't have your "handy" carbine.

Robert, if you can find a Shooting Times, Jan.06
there is an article on shooting the new ammo, with quite a few tables on performance.

Such as a recoil increase of only 0.8 ft-lbs over the standard 150gr.load. And about only half the wind drift at 250 yards.

They went well, but sure this was in a M94 for 30-30.
Big troubles though with the .444 stuff in an old clunker Marlin. Roll Eyes

As an old man who grew up with the 30-30 as his first "big game" rifle I hope you will tell us what you use the 30-30 for in Australia. Much as I loved the 30-30, I think I would hesitate to use it on your buffalo! Are you Aussies shooting those cute little koalas again? Smiler ( Relax - I like the Aussies but never miss a chance to insult them)

Sure.

Have yet to use mine yet as I find it difficult to get away to areas in weekends due to " chauffering" teenage sons to sporting events etc.

Was purchased one, because I always one ( I grew up in the era of Sea Hunt and Chuck Connors as Rifleman) .

Also, they are a great rifle to shoot pigs with and do not have the same type of recoil as a .308.

Naturally WAY too heavy on rabbits and foxes which I mormally shoot.
