Gents:
I am getting the itch to get another Model 71 deluxe in .348. It's been years but I'd like another. A long tang pre war deluxe with a pistol grip cap, sling and swivels, and a bolt peep.

May I ask the price difference and what I'd expect to pay for a 24" barreled rifle or a 20" short rifle barreled M-71?

Your help is appreciated.

I bought mine (S/N 8XXX) last year for $1600. It has the bolt peep, but not the grip cap, or sling and swivels.

Asa former Winchestercollector I too would go for the longtang M71. Why?. Because the M71 at some point marks a transition period of the Model 1886 to a modern era. The longtang M71 is really still an unbroken line of the M1886.

Thanks for the replies. My father bought me one that has all the features that Cal wants but a short tang. The serial number is 176xx. I think he paid 1250 about 7 years ago. A few years later he bought a standard model model for my brother for the same amount but built much later.

I've seen a few of these go at auction, in my area, for over $3K if they're in good shape.

I would say your looking at close to 2900 or more for the configuration you suggest, and add another grand for a 20 inch carbine as they are sought after big time.

I sold a decent one for $1800 recently and it had been drilled and tapped on the side and plugged. It was about 75 percent over all..not a collector, just a shooter.

Its hard to find one that is accurate for whatever reason, out of the 10 or more I have owned over the years only two of them shot under 4 inches at 100 yards with irons...Those two shot at 2 inches, wish I had kept them.

Yes, I still have a soft post in my heart for Winchesters. The Winchester items I have now is my great grandfather's '73 in .32-20 and a couple of years ago I found a set of Winchester tools: bullet mould and reloading tool, for the 1876 .50-95 express. I should get a British proofed express '76 or sell them.

I'm going to shoot a Texas whitetail with my granddads .38-40 model 92 Rifle that he carried in the Texas Rangers ser. #152. first year of production..It shoots 2 iches at 75 yards for 3 shots everytime..I have shot deer with his 30-30 trapper ser. #2425, another first year of production, and one nice Mule deer with his 45 Colt, so the 38-40 rifle is on my list for 2015 deer season..I can get 2000 FPS with a 180 gr. jacketed soft point so that should do the job. He shot and killed a notorious bank robber between Presidio Texas and Marfa Texas with this old gun. shot that bad guy right between the eyes at about 40 yards as the bandit was resting over his car taking aim at gramps, he never got that shot off, the old ranger was faster and more accurate. These old guns have a lot of sentimentality with me.

I love the win. mod 71, 348..Had more than a few but folks kept allowing me to double my money on them dammit! Nothing quite as warm and cozy as an old win. lever action. If only they could talk.

i have had a few old Winchesters over the years.
One of my favorites is a model 1895 SRC in 30/40 Krag. Found another one in nice shape for 1900.
I think about 300 to much.
the thing about these is the have the old west mojo but i was getting 2000 with a 220 grain round nose.
Still a viable elk round up close !
My only currant real old Winchester is a very clean 1894 30/30 src. Its from 1899 , and works just great !...tj3006

We had a rancher friend that hunted elk with us most every year when I was a kid..He used a mod. 95 SRC and 220 gr. Peters ammo at an advertised 1900 FPS and he sure made a lot of one shot kills with it..An uncle used a 300 savage wit whatever box of ammo he grabbed and he made a lot of one shot kills with it..I don't recall ever having to chase one down for either of those old boys..I learned early on that placement not caliber is everthing.

Please reply what weight is the 50/95 Winchester bullet that your mold makes Gas check or plain base ?

Mould and reloading tool are both original Winchester production from the 1870s or early '80s. Bullet is the standard 300 grains weight with a hollow point.

Boy am I happy! Just made a deal on a standard 71 with bolt peep made in the year I was born:

1940.

I now have 3 oldies: 94 SRC in 38-55 and light weight takedown 86 in 33. All 3 are original & good shape. Blesses this old man's heart!

HA! Biebs, my friend, I believe there is a job waiting for you at Collectors' Firearms in Houston. I spoke with a salesman there yesterday who thinks 71s came with rubber butt pads.

I just had a crazy thought,if Blaser made a high powered lever action & it was super duper accurate & if it was'nt damn ugly,I mighta wouda or couda buy one ?
