My 1952 250-3000 99 is 1 in 14 in twist so it favors
lighter weight 87-90 gr bullets.
But I have heard the 117 gr 25-35 RN bullets
can be stabilized-depending on the individual rifle.
Anyone with experience??

I load for a friend/neighbor who has an early one too, + his has to use the lighter bullets; none of the heavier would stabilize. The best performance I have found (in his rifle) is the 75 G. Hornady. For Texas hunting, it will kill anything deader than free credit.

Maybe the cartridge's name is prescriptive: to get 3000fps you need light bullets and that's all they were concerned with.

Measure the twist they vary my 4 99,s in 250 Savage vary from 1-13.5 to 1-14 plus. The 1-13.5 will shoot some shorter 100 gr loads the others will not.
Tried the 117 gr Hornady RN none will shoot it. PM me your E mail and will send my load data Excell file.

All my 99s in 250 are 1x14 AND shoot the 117 gr Hornady mostlY with H414..My most accurate RIFLE is my 1920 TD 99, it shoots that bullet under an inch, It of course is a 1x14 twist..It won;t shoot the 100 gr Blistic tips??,,its favorite bullet is the 85 gr Sierra HP..I think the 117 gr. Hornady shoots because its stright sidded and short for its weight, Its an outstanding game bullet and Ive shot deer and elk and one big black bear with it..Most folks are going by what they read, You have to let the gun talk to you, it will tell you what you want to know every time...Some 99s will not shoot that bullet Im sure, but many will.

BTW I think Hornady is dropping that bullet from their line, so better stock up..If they don't work in your gun I will buy then from you..I also shoot the same bulllet in my 25-35..

I shoot the sierra 117 sptz in mine and the 257 Roberts accuracy is fine with 4064.. but those are my rifles. my kids have all used those guns growing up an I'd hate to load a truck myself with all the animals they killed with them and that bullet.

450 Fuller.
Most 1952 99s are 1x10 twist but a precious few were 1x14 towards the end of 99 production as they were put together with overstocked parts...Might be a good idea to check your twist?? just to be sure..

With this 99 came two boxes of older Remington
100 gr 250 Savage cartridges-6 missing-and a report that the rifle was accurate on deer.
I will probably check the twist to be sure.

Though I have 71s and smokeless 86s-always wanted to fiddle with a Savage 99 and this 99H is nice. Still has color case on the lever. So far the handloads assembled have been accurate with 87-100 gr bullets.
Ray-will keep you informed. Need any 270 gr 348
Hawk bullets?Quien sabe, amigo. R

The 1950 to about 1955 as I recall were the best 99s every made. The were the last of the underlever safety, brass rotor, walnut checkered wood with a snub fore end, and they were feather weights made in a number of calibers, My favorite saddle gun for deer and elk hunting is a 1952 gun in 308 caliber, all those 1950ish fwts are fetching premium prices these days. 250-3000s are bringing an easy $1200 and 95% fetch you $2000plus no auction..
Thanks but I hoared up on 348s 318s and a few others..

This is a 52- 99 EG with the under lever safety,
brass rotor-99 in 95% condition. It still has the
Lyman small peep sight, along with the Marbles fold-down 95 sight-which allows use of a Lyman aperture sight without interference. I have the Marbles 95s on my Model 71s in 348-with Lyman 56 receiver sights; really nice back-up sighting system. Have it on a 450 Alaskan for Alaska homestead use in bear country.

Most of my ranching family have Savage 99EGs mostly 250-3000sw, A few 94s in 30-30 and25-35 and a couple of 95s and 54s in 06 or 30-03..

I have a number of lever guns in all of the above including a Deluxe 71 348 win. but I'm the only true gun nut in the bunch.
