Shooting 40-50 rounds of 45/70 out of the truck window can get a little tiresome but generally I feel the 45/70 marlin is well behaved...I have the 22" barrelled model

Quote: I think you'll be hard pressed to get that velocity out of a 44 mag
ChuckWagon, what velocity have you been getting from the 240's?? The 1760fps that I said is what Federal & Remington both state for the 44mag with a 20" barrel. I know revolvers are only getting 1180(ish) fps, but that is usually from a 7" barrel.
I honestly have no idea if cast bullets in general run slower. I was really referring to the Buffalo Bores that I have been playing with and they are slower than the numbers above but at 270 and 305 grains. Are you getting any penetration with the HP's ? If you always get a lung shot it's a bang-flop caliber for sure. If you get a neck or shoulder they do a lot of meat damage but then that's what their supposed to do.
How about a 444 Marlin? If If I didn't already own an 1895SS in 45/70 I'd probably buy one. They look like a lota fun.The first time I shot my 45/70 with some fairly healthy reloads I said DAMN!!!!!! but it's like anything else you get used to it if you do it enough.

With factory ammo the recoil on my 1895-45/70 is mild.Factory ammo is loaded with 35 too 38 grs of powder,so it can be loaded in trapdoor rifles.I hand load for my 1895,54grs of I.M.R.3031,behind a 405gr bullet. And the recoil of that load,is right up there with the 458 Winchester Mag.For sighting it in I use a sissy bag.
