Tanker

When i first got my Marlin .444ss i experimented with 200 gn TMJ and a full case of H4895 cant remember what load.......... check Hodge web sight ...... load was fast recoil very light..... well compared to my 325 gn hard cast loads.
Anyway topped with a 4x44 scope accuracy at 200 yards was excellant ! I never got a chance to try it on living tissue but it would certinally do the job !!

A 444 for varmints?
Reminds me of the joke re the Scotsman in Canada who on seeing a Moose, said "what's that". The guide says it's a moose,
Dingus Mc Pherson says "well if that's a mouse
I'd hate to see ye RAts".

Tanker~

I have dug out an article from a British magazine 1993 they tested a Marlin .444ss and Hornady XTP bullets with reloads using Re 7 and 2400

240 gn 49gn of Re7 2149fps not a max load but the author says it was amazingly consistant giving single hole groups at 50 yards.

180 gn 37 gn of 2400 2500fps the author says he chronoed a load at 3000fps but thought the pressure was too high and backed off.

Four Deer were taken both Red deer and Sika deer between 60-150 yards most went down on the spot as if pole axed or went a very short distance.........
He remarks that he found the lighter faster bullet to do less meat damage but as all were heart shots there was not much to waste !
He also remarked all bullets held together dispite being pushed much faster than Hornady recommend and no bullets were recovered.

Given the results on our deer im sure they wont do your varmints much good at all Wink
