A old Bloke in the NT of AUZ.By the name of tom hardey (long dead now bless him) Used a 25-35 for pigs for the number of years that I knew him and swore by it.I know he had to form his own brass but never did find out what he used as the parent case all times wasted wot's not spent shootin

I've one of the standard Trail's End .25/35's waiting for me to pick it up off layaway at the shop I work in. It came in with surprisingly decent wood for a plain jane 94. For eons I wanted a decent .25/35 but all the used ones I saw were overpriced dogs plus I wanted one I could scope. I never dreamed anyone would revive it in a lever gun so just 2 years ago I ordered a custom Contender Carbine .25/35 barrel from Fox Ridge. Low and behold, the 94 is offered in .25/35 for '05. I normally don't buy more than one rifle in the same caliber but I made an exception in this case.

My first deer rifle was a 25-35 SRC, and I shot a simi truck load of deer with it, and about 3 or 4 big bull elk..It worked fine if you did your part and were careful... Diciple of Keith, The 25-35 ammo has always been available and still is, never went out of production...The 25-35 is simply a 30-30 with the neck sized down to .257...I will deliver a 117 gr. bullet at about 2300 FPS..Other than factory ammo of 117 grs. the only bullet available for handloading is the excellent 117 gr. Hornady..Remington makes a 86 gr. bullet for the 25-20 and Speer makes a 75 gr. fN bullet but neigher work worth a flip in the Win or Marlin barrel twists...So your pretty well stuck with the 117 gr. hornady. I still hunt with one every deer season out of nostalgia I suppose... It does require that you be a hunter, not a shooter... I try to keep all shots under a 100 yards, and will take a broadside standing shot at up to about 200 with a rest..that's about its limit...If you don't get that little pill into the lungs or heart, they you will have a long, hard, day ahead of you... I have had to pass on some really nice Idaho bucks because I did'nt have a .270 or something of that ilk, but I don't mind, I have shot more than my share of big deer and maybe some youngster that really wanted a big deer got the big ones I passed on, that would make me feel pretty good as a matter of fact... Is the use of the 25/35 just a nostalgia thing or is there some thing I am missing? The bullet selection at this point is minimal. With the fine 7/30 Waters dying off I can't see a reason for interest in the 25/35. Do not misunderstand me, I'm am not critizing the 25/35, just searching for the reason for the interest. There must be some or Winchester would not have chambered for it. It should be good for coyotes and a lighter recoiling deer rifle for beginners. Educate me please. RELOAD - ITS FUN!

I wonder if Winchester isn't hoping it will be popular as a light-kicking flat-shooting race gun for the cowboy shooters. Good hunting!

I think because Cowboy Action shooting has really taken off, Winchester is responding by broadening their line. I handled one of the 25-35's and besides the price tag, it felt great. I for one am very excited, because now I can form 22 Savage Hi-Power casings without crushing brass. -Spencer

In my case its mostly nostalgia, and years of using one as a youth created that... As to its effective, its a 100 yard deer rifle, has always been one of the most accurate of lever calibers, a great kids and ladies rifle if they can shoot.... It's not as good a killer as a 30-30 by a good deal....but head and shoulders better than the 22 hornet, Bee, 25-20, 32-20, 38-40, 44-40 and probably/maybe better than a 44 magnum IMO..... I have a .25-35 and a 7-30 Waters. The Waters moves the 120 gr. bullet at some 400 fps faster than the .25-35 moves the slightly lighter 117 gr. The way I use them it doesn't matter.
