Also asked this q over on leverguns do you need a taller front sight when you fit a Lyman 66WB?

arkypeteI'm having the same site put on my 1886. I've pondered the same question.
I'm betting that it depends on the bullet weight and velocity that that your ammo generates.

416SWArky I had a reply by user MikeD on leverguns he said he has got a 1886el and did not have to change the front sight.

arkypeteI'm not planning on changing the front site, if I have to change the site it's no big deal.
When I installed a Smith ladder/Buckhorn on my model 92 I needed to install a higher front site or shoot at things at 150 yards only. I ordered in a couple different heights and installed the lower one.
The guys at Brownell's were very helpful even for a piddling sale like two front sites.

Trapdoorarkypete,
Do you like that Smith ladder sight?
I am going back and forth between the Smith and a Marble Tang for my 1886. I am wanting enough elevation for real long range shooting. I have enough with the factory rear for 200 yards, but for fun, I like shooting at big rocks at a lot farther than 200...

I like the Smith ladder sight for the Winchester 92. The buckhorn part is very thick so it's easier to use the usual thin buckhorns.
I doubt that I'd ever take a shot with the 92 45 Colt much beyond 100 yards, considering I'm using a 300 grain cast bullet.
The Smith sight is very well made and hardened. The metal in the sight is harder then the steel in your barrel. I got a buddy to drill and tap for an Allen headed set screw to hold the sight in place.

Jim Z.I have a Lyman 66WB on my 1886. The front sight is fine. I'm having a Williams FP-71 installed on my 1886 SRC. I'll let you know how that works. It may fit the 1886 better than the Lyman,

I'm using Saeco 300 gas checked bullets.
I'm very happy with 20 grains of H110.
I think of this load as 45-70 lite.
