I just ordered some bulk bullets for my .357 1894 marlin, they are the Remington 140 grain semi jacketed hollow points. Any powder recommendations and has anyone tried them on whitetail?

While I'm one of the few people that thinks a 357Revolver
works on deer under the right conditions , which is to basically pretend you are bowhunting and leave the stick flicker at home.

I still don't recommend using any hollowpoint pistol bullet
With my DanWesson 357 I'd load 158gr Softpoints out of my 10" barrel.

In a Marlin Carbine I think I'd go with either 158gr SoftPoints
or mabey 180gr bullets.

My brother recently got himself a 44mag Marlin '94 and simply doesn't understand why
I want one in 357... that's simple, I don't own a 44Mag sidearm.

I'm using 296 and Rem 180's for my 16" Winchester. So far so good.

I've heard good about your 140's in revolvers, but dont' know about results when using them with the longer Lever barrels.

Thanks for the replies. I thought that someone may have some actual experience with this particular bullet on game. I plan on working up a load and then trying to fill some deer management permits making sure that the shots are reasonable for the caliber.

Sorry, no experience with Remington 140. I have used the Remington 180 gr softnose hollowpoint @ 1500 from my Contender with good effect though. Were I using a 140 at carbine velocities I'd stay away from the shoulders and shoot for both lungs. As for powder I've had great experience with H110 for maximum velocity loads.

I'd use 158 Rem JSP-run then at 1700-1800 fps and they'll wack Whitetails good out to 125 yds! I'm going to use them this year on Mulely so I let you know how they work!

Ditto with Puma, have some and prefer them over HP's but Brian Pearce wrote highly of Speer Gold Dot HP's in 158. 140 hp's would be great on coyotes and the like.

A 357 out of a rifle has more bark than one might imagine, have to shoot one to understand. Ballistics are like night and day vs standard revolver performance. 1900-2000 is there with Lil Gun and 158s, and 1800+ with H110 and 296.

Carried my Marlin with RP 158 SP's last season, did not have chance to squeeze on a deer, but had all the confidence in it.

And all of bullets that I've recovered had opned up very nicely- pretty mushroom shaped!
Atleast .5-.75" that should make one heck of a wound channel!
