Hi yankees1 Sounds like your off to a good start i have one question is allOk maybe two  Since your reloading for the rifle have you thought about making your own bullets ? And no i dont mean casting them .. I mean make your own bullets . cut the copper form it into a jacket fill it with preweighted lead and then swag it into a bullet .. The cost of all this is kinda high Swag dies start for the .458 for your 45/70 at around $ 195.00 you can just order the jackets in bags of 250 in .458 for about 22.00 and use your rockchucker press to swag the bullets with.. We agree with you! We know you want the best, or you would not be ordering from Corbin. That is why we will not cut the quality just to keep the price lower. Corbin products are made in the USA by American machinists and die-makers. We know you understand and appreciate high precision, good materials and design, and would rather pay a little more for a top quality tool, if the only other choice would be to cut corners for the sake of price alone. Having a little better quality is seldom a problem compared to the alternative. Specifying ejection pin size, ogive shapes other than 1-E, 6-S, or ULD in rifle calibers, or other than 3/4-E or TC in pistol calibers, means making custom reamers and laps and building a single die to order. Most bullet makers will find the standard jacket draw die is adequate for typical hunting and target shooting bullets. The production design adds another level of design precision with replaceable, screw-in punches and a universal punch base, and pre-nesting of the jackets in a dual-chamber die. The benchrest design requires extreme measures in production, such as never opening the collet while the entire punch assembly is being built, massive long alignment engagement of huge punch bases as the long die/punch assembly slides together, and a design that actually improves concentricity over the previous draw (whereas most draws add eccentricity to prior draws). The cost of the various jacket reducing dies reflects the work that must go into their construction. If you need the ultimate in a precision jacket draw, the benchrest style is the correct choice. It provides a level of concentricity that is the highest in the world. For long production runs, the production style is superior to either of the other designs. It has a concentricty between the benchrest and the standard level, but a speed and convenience of operation that beats either of the other two designs. For most jacket reduction work, a standard design will do the job as well as it needs to be done. Martin, I saw your post on my thread about the 45/90 etc. and I saw all your bullet making gear for the 50 cal bullets I like it, I would be interested in hearing more about it. !! Are you having a 50-110 made as well ?? I have neally paid off my new 1886 extra lite and am considering such a conversion. I am worried though that the 50-110 is to much of a good thing on a lever gun and that the action will not last the distance, I mean I do not want to build a gun that the action will be ruined in say a 1000 shots. I like my stuff to last a long time. | |||

Yankee's, a bullet you may not know about is a bullet made especially for the 45/70 by woodleigh it is a 405 gr flat point and it hangs together really well and would make a great bullet for your bigger stuff, does not come apart like the 400 gr speer FP. | |||

HI, Martin, I think you know far more than I do with making bullets and I see you have 10 times the equipment than I can dream of.I would like to see what you come up with in the 50-110 or .510 50 cal bullets and have some penetration test done with different ones or matterals. I think 550-570 grains will be great in the 50-110, as it can still be push to 2000 or more fps and have over a .3 SD. Other matterals than hard cast the bullet may have to be longer, which limits case capacity. As you know Martin lead is much more dense which means that even with the same weight the HC is going to be shorter compared to a brass or copper bullet.I think 550 or 570 HC should work in any case, but you will know more about bullet matterals than I do. Hi yas again KEV When the solids do come out the will be made out of what is called ( Powdered Tungston ) I have only picked up enough of it ( 70.000 grains )to do just a test run on the bullet i need a mailing address from you so when i am ready to send out free sample packs you can get yours.. As i may have told you er or not dave corbin sold my set of dies .well he owns the comp. but i had first dibs on the dies anyway he sold then the day before i got there to Winchester firearms comp. grrr Turkey dave!! Anyway i had to come up with another 450.00 in order to get my dies made in time now its going to be atleast 3 months i need theses other dies to make the longer jackets for the 550 grain and the 600 grain bullets in .458 and as for the 50 cal set ...i got put back at the end of the list for the special jacket maker ..and if that was not bad enough... my buddy called me and told me he was going to hold off on the huntting trip to Africa.   .......He is heading down to Navada to look at building sites  ...... i guess the taxs are less the tight fisted B$$$$# ... so i have been working out in the shop building stronger tables to use for the press's and racks for the swag dies ....Anyway send me an email with a mailing address to send the samples to nuni28@earthlink.net Pottsy | |||
