A buddy of mine has a new staninless Rossi in 44mag and it shoots great. It is very smooth and a nice looking gun. I have an older Rossi in 357 and like it alot. I used to own a Marlin 1894 in 44mag and it was a Jam-o-matic. Very accurate, but would jam up constantly.

If I had to choose, I'd pick the Marlin. Based on the platform and not the cartridge. I think the Marlin is the better gun and if you want you can load the .444 down (mentioned by another poster). I've had 3 .44 Mag carbines, a Winchester M94, a Marlin M1894 and a Contender 21" and the cartridge is capable enough to 125-150 yards. Of course, with proper bullets, the .444 is as well. I've looked at several of the M92 clones from different makers and distributors but didn't buy any of them. I did buy a Marlin 1894 in .357 Mag (used without crossbolt).

Of all these guns I've owned, only the Winchester M94 .44 Mag was a "jamamatic" and not usually. ALL have been plenty accurate.

Well, thanks for the insight but I wound up purchasing a Henry Golden Boy instead!

I've got a stainless Puma .454 Casull. The accuracy at 100 yds is better than my old eyes are good for!!! I can consistently whack a paper plate offhand at 100 meters(what my range has for distance). I plan on getting a set of the Hi-Viz sights they offer. The .454 will really thump you. I've been shooting the Hornady 240 gr loads. They give me almost 2300 fps, which according to the reloading manuals , is right thee with the .444 Marlin for power. That load should really whack a deer or black bear at 100yds or less. So far, I love the gun but hate the sights. I can only shoot about 6 rounds and I've had enough of the recoil. Bare in mind, I'm no lightweight, about 250, and normally think my .338 Win Mag has little recoil!!!

I have to admit I have TUNNEL vision when it comes to spending MONEY on a Ross/Puma vs a Marlin.

But I am an cynic and narrow minded about this topic.

Here is what I suggest:

Spend a your money on a R or a P . Then take the same rifle to a gun show and try to get $.50 on the dollar.

This is a no brainer to me but then again.

As far as a 44 vs a 444. At 'woods' range either will be fine since they both shoot the same bullet and then again so would a revolver in 44 mag be just as good as the rifle.
Main difference would be the velocity gain in a rifle barrel while portability in under brush is in favor of the revolver.

But if you're gonna have just one all around rifle in either caliber then strap a 44 on your hip and put a sling on the 444!
