I was looking at the current version of the Winchester 1894 with the 24" barrel. Gander has one in .44 Mag and one in 30-30. Can't recall the exact model name but has the checksered stock and as mentioned the 24" barrel. Nor I know you don't need a 24" barrel but I really like the way they look. Anyone have experience with eithr of these, accuracy achieved etc.? I was thinking of a close range deer/hog gun perhaps.

I'm sure there are quite a few who'll disagree with me, but I find the 44 in a rifle leaves a bit to be desired in anything over 100 yards. Under 100 yards the 30/30 has a bit more knockdown IMHO. I don't think it would be a problem for small whitetails but larger hogs you'd definately see a difference. I'd put a lyman #66 peep sight on it, and replace the rear with a folding leaf. That is a wonderful combination for a 94. If in close remove the peep and raise the leaf, if you do dawn/dusk hunting paint the white diamond with luminous paint.
