Not sure why this is happening, but I just got my Puma 92 SS 454 Casull back from M&M Gunsmithing about a month ago for some HiViz Sights installed, fix the loading gate, and lastly the rear stock was splitting at the tang. So I'm at the range today, I put about ten rounds down range. I finish pulling my target. I'm very happy with result, I look at my rifle again and notice a one inch x three quarter inch chunk of the rear stocking missing by the right side of the receiver. This is stock number 2 broken. So how many of you Puma 454 owners have had stock breakage?

CK: I do not own a Puma, but I know that the 454 is not light on recoil! Mt guess is that the stock did not fit around the rear tang very well and maybe had a small gap at the receiver side where the stock meets it. 10 rounds with some stout loads may have driven that tang back into the stock and split it. On the next stock I think I would glass bed the butt stock. Cut a little relief around the rear of the tang and use some Brownell's Acra-gel there as well as the front of the stock sides where it meets the receiver. After it cures I would relieve the stock about .010 thous. or so at the tang. so that you got a very slight gap between the tang and the stock. This will allow some movement and hopefully prevent those splits. I have used this approach on all my big bore bolt actions, such as .35 Whelen and .375 H&H and never had one split.
