I just bought a savage 99c at a garage sale, or my wife did for me. I ran the serial number on a savage site and it said manufacter dat of 1920. The Gun looks new. I was very shocked when it said 1920. Someone has put a 1.75x5 tasco scope on it. The forearm and stock has some real nice checkering on it. The wood has some very nice grain to it. On the top right of the stock next to the safety the wood looks a slightly faded, like it may have sat for quite sometime in the light. The rear sight is probably not original as it is a williams adjustable. The action is very tight like a brand new gun that has not been worked much.

If this gun was a .308 i would consider using it. Being in alaska a .243 just is not much use to me. What i am looking for is some idea as to where to get a value for this gun for a sale or trade for something i just cant live without. Thanks in advance, Greg P

greg: If your Sav.99 is actually a 99C (Clip loading, safety on tang) it surely was not made in 1920,or anytime close to that..One reference site is known to not handle the alpha prefix serial #'s accurately.suspect that is the problem here.At any rate, and just fwiw, you could consider yourself very well served if getting $400 for it..Good luck, Idabull

I don't know, I sold a Savage 99 CD series A in .243 for $625 or so just a few months ago...and it sounds like his gun is in better shape than mine was.

I would like to know the year of the gun for no other reason than to say now i know. This gun is in excellant shape. When i get an idea what it is worth i will post it for sale in the classified section. I would post it now but i wouldnt want to look like an idiot for posting either to high or to low. I do know that i would like to post it asap. Thanks for the replys so far. Feel free to make me an offer or pass on the info if you like. Greg p

Greg, go here: www.24hourcampfire.com and to the Savage Collectors forum. With a serial no., these guys can tell you year of manufacture. There's a world of difference between a 99C and an 1899C.

You either got the serial number information wrong or you have a gun made up of parts, commonly know at gunshows as a parts gun....There were no 243s in 1920....With the checkering and description you give of the gun sounds like to me you have a 1920s gun thats been monkied with a great deal and converted to a 243, not a practice I would recommend..You really need to take it to a real sho nuff savage expert gunsmith, and find out what you have there.
