The 98A bolt peep sight for my model 71 was removed and later lost by the rifle's previous owner. I could have bought an after market copy. The current quoted cost is over $350. I believe that I am not the only guy that needs to replace a sight or a part of the sight and the logical solution seemed to be to document the sight design so people would have a make or buy option. I had great hesitations about creating the drawings. Reverse engineering is always a challenge and this certainly was also. I began my efforts with the honerable intention to complete the reverse engineering and then share the drawings via the forum. What I found was that I had to pay just to borrow a factory part in order to make measurments. I also had to beg a number of folks just for pictures that were high enough quality that I could print them. The pictures were needed for parts that no-one would loan me, so I used the high resolution pictures and a set of instruments, and by translation and ratios, was able to come up with the additional design dimensions. I then went through a fabrication process and made a few mistakes before finalizing the dimensions and documenting appropriate fabrication techniques. Well, after more than 75 hours of work I completed the effort and now have a set of design drawings. The drwaings document the sight base, Aperture/Windage Piece, Aperture, Screws, etc. as well as fabrication tricks. With that much effort invested, I hope to share my designs, but also hope folks can understand my hesitation to give the drawings away. Anyone interested in copies of the drwings can PM me at: Robert.Nisbet1@US.Army.MiL Anyone needing to discuss the design is welcome to call me (256-876-1939). Sorry I didn't see this post sooner. I would be interested in the drawings. I also happen to have an original bolt peep on my 71. Let me know what costs you envision with your pm. Frank

Bob. Did you see that the screws are a twin pitch design. Jim Wisner

Life is too short to do what you are contemplating and the finished product will not even resemble the original. Better to just buy one from Garry Fellers in Texas imo. At Home on the Range-Texas Panhandle
