Kev,
I have one of the original oldies and it is a VERY good sight. But I use in on a .22 for squirrels.

If you want a really good long range sight - you want an MVA in my opinion. You could opt for their clone of the Marbles - which is much better than new-made marbles I think. Or better, get a 107 or 130 model vernier. These are much better than any Marbles. They are also much more expensive, they are removable, they are repeatable (really important if adjusting for different distances in the field).

They are not so great when used laid down. Depending on the make of your rifle, they can be a bit hazzardous if shot in the folded back position. The Marbles is better for that.

Yes, I do use mine out to 250 yds and further.

HI,

I would like to know if anyone here has one or have used one and what do you think of it?.How does it work out at longer range?, say 250-300 yards?.I would have ghost ring and front post, but thought maybe to use one of these also and have it set-up for longer range,I just am not crazy about having it on the grip of the stock, to bad they just did not make one that could be placed on and off,Thanks,Kev

The Marbles Peep Tang Sight is a very nice piece.
Not very cheap, but for those who like adjustable windage, it is just perfect.
I think they are about $125 whereas the Lyman Tang Sight is roughly $75.

Very well-made, solid steel, nice adjustments.
An all-around winner.

I am not sure exactly what elevation adjustment there is available on the Marbles Sight.
The Lyman I believe has something a bit less than one inch, so if the Marbles is comporable, which it probably is, a 300 yard compensation should be well within adjustment range.
As far as making a tang sight removeable, I have personally never heard of such a thing.
Pretty much every tang sight that I have ever seen simply folds down when you do not want to use it.
Also, the sight should not interfere with your grip on the gun, so I would see no reason why you would need to take it off.
If you are serious about getting one, and I mean SOON, like in the next week or so, I am going to be placing an order for one for another customer, and I can add yours to it.

If you have any more questions, feel free to visit my website, or respond to this post, or send me a PM.

HI,

SHOPCARTRACING,I thought if one could remove the sight when not needed it would make it easier to handle the rifle. To me the tang sight looks like it could get in the way of gripping the rifle?,Kev

Kev, it's not only that - and gripping is not really that big a deal here - it's where does it go in the recoil process.

Get a real Marbles or better and Vernier and then go out to 300+ if you want.

I just removed the tang sight from my 1886 and replaced it with a Lyman reciever sight.
I could not grip the stock with my right hand without getting a solid bash on the thumb knuckle. I don't believe that I can get the best grip for accuracy shooting offhand with a tang site, since I cannot get a good grip on the rifle.

Jim's response describes why I removed the only tang sight I ever put on a gun. I hate the interference with my grip.

I really love the way the things look on a rifle though.

I don't care much for tang sights of any kind, way to close to the eye in big kickers and will eat your hand off if you shoot heavy recoiling guns..I love the old Wincheser sliding bar peep sight, I think it is also a Lyman or Marbles.....

I think a receiver is good to about 200 yards, 300 yds is a stretch and chances of wounding are increased a bunch, at least would be with me and I shoot irons a lot...

Marble at one time made the slickest peep sight that mounted on top of the receiver just in front of the hammer, it had wings on each side and was fully adjustable..I have owned a couple of those sights, just real nice...

I never cared for the tang as they have put eyes out and injured eyes many times in the past, mostly on steep uphill shots it seems...

Brockmans guns also makes a slick peep sight and Talley makes one for his Talley bases, I have one of Talleys on my Marlin in case I want to take the scope off and shoot irons.
