Here is a 45-70 400 grain on the left a 50-110 525 grain in the center a 50 Alaskan 475 grain on the right. As you can see the 50-110 is much larger than the 50 Alaskan. Kev

Kev did you use a win Xtra lite 45/70 1886 ?? and does the xtra lite mean it has a weaker action or just a lighter barrel and mag tube ?? What model 1886 did you start with Kev ??

Also what stock is your gun wearing and where did you get it from ??

It also seems to have a break is that correct ??

How long is your barrel and how many shots does it hold ??

Was the peep easy to fit ??

sorry for all the questions but this project interests me.

PC.

HI,

No it was not the win lite, standard win 86.The stock was hand made as there is no production stocks in synthetic matteral. The lite with the win 86 as I understand it has to due with the barrel, it is lighter but I believe the action is the same. Anyway I went with a standard win 86 had a badger 22.5 inch barrel placed on.And MR. Clay had put a handgun muzzle on as it work very well for the big 50-110 and is on the small size.It holds 5 in the tube, which is very good,MR. Clay put a heavy duty tube for the longer length. The peep sight are place so the scout scope can be used and when the scope is off the peeps can be used, the rear ghost ring is a little in the sight of the scope, but it does not bother me and is hardly noticeable. Thanks,Kev

Kev,

I am very impressed with the rifle. Do you think an ashley Ghost ring would work or fit ??

In regards to the mag capacity you said the mag tube was heavy duty was this due to recoil, the other thing was could you have got greater than 5 rounds capacity or would have that required a longer mag tube and barrel ??

HI,

PC really both it allowed to put 5 in the tube and also with more weight, each round had a 525 grain bullet, the tube had to be stronger,it also give more balance with more weight out in front also the mag tube had to be well attach to the barrel and I mean well, for the recoil..I think ashley would work fine it may just take a little fitting. Kev,

it probably would be not a big deal for a good smith to make a mag tube up that is heavy duty.

How many rounds do you think you would get in the shorter extra lite tube ??

All inall do you feel it was a hard project or pretty simple conversion ??

HI,

PC it should not be a problem at all, I would guess 3 or 4, but I would stay with a heavier tube, you may just have it a little shorter. Kev

Kev,

I think your project is great and I have subsequently put on layaway and 1886 Xtra lite in 45/70 from Legends arms.

I am very impressed with your stock as well.

Just a question what makes this 1886 action so much preferred for a .50 lever conversion over the Marlin ??

I mean what makes the 1886 so much stronger ??

These 1886's should be very strong with the modern metals and the Miruoka factory make some first rate stuff to.

HI,

The action on thw win86 or 71 are longer, the Marlin would not be long enough for a 50-110, but if okay for the 50 Alaskan which is shorter than the 50-110.The design of the 86 or 71 is stronger from what I have been told by my smith. MR. Dave Clay. I believe MR. Ricks will concur with this as he makes 50 cal levers also.PC give MR. Clay a call he has no problem of taking the time to go into details.Phone number 817 465 7338 Thanks,Kev

Thanks Kev for your help,

I wonder if anyone makes a flat jacketed heavy bullet in .510 cal suitable for tube mags ??

Also what twist is ideal for the 50-110 ??

What speeds do you think you could get with say a 570 gr or 600 gr bullet ?? I am guessing 1800-1900 fps or same as a 45/70 would push a 400 gr bullet.

Safari Kid,

I had my smith make up a rail for mine and it is drilled and tapped and screwed down.

I had my barrel made with the contours that Clay did for Kev's.

Here is some pics of my 50-110.

Kev

It looks like the loading port was lengthened in your first picture. Is that so?

Did the action need to be adjusted to accommodate the bigger cartridge?

Concho,

apparently Dave Clay reccomends 1-22 twists for modern 50-110 rounds and thats what Kev's rifle has on it, so thats what I had my smith order for my 50-110.

I am in Australia and so I used an Aussie barrel made by sprinter. I remember trying to deal with Badger a few years back to get a .585 Nyati barrel and there customer service was SHIT................flash website rah rah rah, did not answer my e-mails nor answer the phone, I did want one twoof there .585 barrels one for my friends rifle and one for me go with Pac Nor, there customer service is a lot better from all accounts.

Rick the loading port on an 1886 conversion is made bigger as well as some metal removed at the top to facilitate the longer round..................................I sort of liken the conversion to cramming .404's, .375 H&H's into M98's it is done and works well but if there a magnum length 1886 it would be slightly better Big Grin

The 50-110 hits hard !!

There is a fair bit of work needed, the load port ground on the inside, cartridge carrier ground wider and longer plus a few other internal mods. It is more than just a rebarrel.

The barrel on mine is a McGowen and prob to tighter twist think it is about 1:16.

Shot 1 deer and a few roos but yet to recvover a bullet.
