Savage 99 accuracy

I'm continually amazed by the Savage 99. I've owned a bunch of them over the years and found a 1909 mfg takedown in 30 WCF at a local shop. The previous owner had installed a Weaver 330 sometime in the 1930's I suspect. Anyway I took it to the range and off the bench it shot 150 gr Remington ammo into 1.1"(5 shots). 170 gr was 3 into .75" and 2" lower. All in all a good old gun.

Great rifles. I am currently looking for a 250 takedown to replace one I sold many moons ago. I hunt with a 300 that is good for 3 inch at 100 yards with a peep. Actually it will do way better but thats the best I can do.
Anyone have a 250? or know about one or care to guess on a fair price.
Thanks
Frank

Dr D:

That is the type of rifle I would take over any NEW gun off of the shelf. I don't know about you but I find it so satisfying to have accuracy like that with a rifle that has a long history to it.

Especially when it is in an older classic caliber. Id love to find a Savage 99 in 30/30, and also 38/55 that shot that well. Throw in a 32 Win Special while you are at it!( if they made them).

What a find and what a keeper!
Cheers and Good shooting

I had a 1947 99 in 300 savage that would match any bolt action I had, would do sub MOA on a regular basis if I did my part. It was topped with a 4X Leupold and was dead nuts on at 100 yds.
Sold it to a good friend who wanted to give it to his son.
I have another 99 in 358 that's not as accurate but will still do 1.5" at 100yds with my handloads.
It wears a Leupold 3-9X compact.

I have 99 takedown in 250 with a Lyman peep sight that I got from an elderly friend a few years back. The bore on this gun was a little rough. He gave me 5 boxes of his reloads with the gun.Because of the bore condition I didn't expect much in the way of accuracy. To my delight, the gun shot a nice 7/8" group.I've made up two more barrels for it, one in 308 and one in 30BR.I shoot low pressure lead loads only,so everything works out fine.I really enjoy this gun.

Doc, you got lucky, 1899's manufactures around 1909 were only made in T/D models on request only, which would make it a special order.

Seafire, the 1899 was never made in the 32 special caliber that I know of, but I have heard rumors of one.

I have a 38-55 and a 32-40, sweet rifles, also a model 1895 made in 1896 in 303 Savage.

I have a Savage 99 Takedown in 22 Savage Hi-Power.
It was made in 1912.
I just went out and shot it a couple of weeks ago for the first time in forever.
I made me up about 30 reloads the night before and shot them the next day.
It has an old Lyman Peep Sight on it and I was hitting the black of the target at 50 yards.
That is good enough for me, enough to shoots cans and stuff with.
When I got home, I remembered that I had started to refinish the stock many years ago so I freshened up the wood and over the next week rubbed a nice oil finish into what is now a really pretty walnut stock.
I love these guns.

My first 99 was a 250 Savage TD made in 1917-perch belly stock and all- with a shot out barrel. I asked a gunsmith friend to put a new barrel on it and before he was through I had a 22-250,250 Savage and 300 Savage all in one package with scopes to match every caliber. He liked it so well he made one for himself as he went along. He sold his for $7000 just before he died. Mine shoots MOA in all three calibers. I never thought of selling it.
Henry said after he made the scope mount that if he ever made another one it would cost $1000. All three scopes are on Leupold QD mounts.
A wonderful old gun mae by a good friend. My kids will have to worry about how much it's worth -not me.

I am an old time fan of the Savage m-99 perfering the 99EG or the 1950s Mod 99F....I have a 99F in .308 and 250-3000 and I have one of the very rare M-99EGs in a .308..I recently sold a 99EG in 250 Savage..

They all shoot a 3 shot inch group at 100 off a bench...Most any of them will shoot 1.5 to 2 inches out of the box and with a glass bedding job on the butt stock and forend they will invarible shoot an inch..there are a couple of tricks to glass beddint them but when done right they really produce.
