Seems I recall there having been a .25 cartridge based on the .45-70 case, but that may just be wishful fantasy....

Anyway, am now at the age where heavy recoil may be a significant retinal-tear hazard.

So, if one of you guys wanted to build a .25 caliber rifle on the Win Model 1886 action, what would you use, or invent?

348 win necked down to 25.
would fit here nicely and i bet would beat the 25-06 in velocity.
i don't think you would have to change the bolt face either. and it would work in the mag.

if it was possible i would love to have an 86
in 250-3000 [250 savage]
as that would just have cool wrote on the side in GIANT letters.

Yeh, that does have a nice sound to it...especially as I have a bunch of currently unused .348 brass laying around. Would in effect be a .25/.50-110. Should work out to have plenty of body taper to make it feed well, too.

Please do not take this the wrong way, I am not questioning you, I am just wondering why you would go with the 1886?? I know the 1886 is a great rifle, I love mine??

I have seen a few of the Marlin's in 32-20 or 44-40. Man that would be a greatr low recoil deer rifle. Just my opinion. I apologize if I might have offended you, I just think the 1886 would be a large firearm to carry for shooting a light deer cartridge?? Tom.

I'm not at all offended; it is a very reasonable question and I understand your point.

I guess the answer is, because I really love my '86, but am having enough eye problems that the eye specialist has prohibited me from shooting ANY of my larger bore guns.

Actually, he doesn't want me shooting ANY guns, but my evaluation of that is that he has a knee-jerk unthinking emotional fear of ALL guns.

So I am looking to put together something with little recoil which will still be useful and fun to shoot, in one of my old favorite rifles. For reduced recoil, the weight of the '86 is a "plus".

Best wishes,

AC

the 86 is easy enough to shoot cause of the weight.
and necking down the 348 the simplest
to get dies for.
you should easily be able to use the 90 grain bullets for even less recoil.
and something like 40 grains of 4895 would give you good velocities at reduced recoil.

heavy gun, lighter bullets [properly constructed]at moderate velocities.
will definately equal dead deer and light recoil
