I am after a good hog pill and load for a marlin 44mag.

300 gr GC hardcast with a big metplat and a max load of H110 fired with a magnum LR primer (for cold weather) or a magnum LP if it's warmer.

If you want factory ammo get the Buffalo Bore.

For another good factory load try Speer's Deep Curl.

I like 270gr. speer gold dot bullets in front of 20.5grs. of H110 in my Marlin 1894. I've killed a lot of hogs with that load.

I also shoot some 310 gr. True Shot bullets (cast) in front of 20 grs. of H110. They are very accurate in the Marlin but the huge metplat makes them harder to feed properly.

The Gold dots will go completely through 95% of hogs you shoot broad side. I've never recovered a True Shot although I've taken some hard quartering shots.

To me the Gold Dots kill hogs better since they expand better than the cast bullet and I don't have penetration problems with them.

Not knowing what bullets are readily where you live, I would recommend a cast bullet from 240gr to 300gr. Your Marlin might not feed some SWC style bullets, but is should feed bullets like the ones in Federal's 300gr Cast Core factory loads. They are made by Cast Performance I think.

Also the Speer 270gr, the Hornady 240 or 300gr are good bullets.

Baised on some testing I did last weekend the Barnes XPB bullets are worth a look.

Most likely any of the standard 240gr jacketed bullets will be ok as well. I had excellent results on the one pig I have shot with a Hornady factory 225gr FTX Lever Evolution.

The only thing to worry about is if you get into a big boar, say 250lbs and up, is that a soft jacketed bullet might not give you enough penetration if you have to penetrate the fighting shield and the shoulder bones of the bigger hogs.

I would use H-110 or Winchester 296 powder.

The cast pills we have here in Australia have been designed for target shooting as we are not allowed to hunt with hand guns . Can get 240gr round nose flat points that have been coated with a low friction coating. Have used them on goats and dogs which they worked well but I have not tried them on pigs yet

Nick, Any idea what that low fiction coating is? What color is it?

In regards to cast 44 Mag bullets, any bullet above 240 grains with a fairly large meplat will do good, and give you a lot of penetration.

I've been using 240gr Rem JFP in my 1894, with very good luck and very good accuracy.

How about a 300 grain Barnes Buster for your hog hunting.
