I've got my eye on a Savage 99 in 284 Winchester. I only got a quick look but what I did see confused me:

Labled "Savage 99 Model H" on left side of reciever ring. I can find no info on Model H's being chambered in 284.

Has a Savage variable scope (I think 3x9) and leather lens caps.

Tang safety

Monte Carlo stock

Didn't check magazine...my bad.

Any ideas?

Savage cataloged the 284 in the 99C, 99DE, 99DL, 99F, and 99PE.

99Cs didn't have monte carlo stocks during the run of 284s.

99DEs were engraved.

99DLs were stamped "99M" on the receiver ring, with the "M" standing for "Monte Carlo Stock".

99Fs didn't have monte carlo stocks.

99PEs were engraved.

Unless it is engraved, it is probably a 99DL. However, I believe that there were a number of non-cataloged 99 configurations made from spare parts durng the mid-1980s, so it could also be 1 of those.
