I like using peep sights on my lever guns and have an affinity for the Lyman 66. I have a couple older steel ones. Lyman do make one to fit the 86/71 frame sizes, however these are now made out of aluminium and folks report that they dont hold up under heavy loads. The Ashley / XO style seems virtually bomb proof, but how easy is it to adjust these sights for different loads ? A steel Lyman 66 to fit would be what the doctor ordered but that is not going to happen. Are there any other alternatives to consider ? Joe

Joe I got my Redfield reciever sights on Ebay. They are steel, made in the 1950s and brand new. I found sites for my 1886 and 1895s. Jim "Whensoever the General Government assumes undelegated powers, its acts are unauthoritative, void, and of no force." --Thomas Jefferson

arkypete, thanks your reply. I've never seen a Redfield. Is this like the Lyman in terms of looks, set up and operation. Any experiences out there with the Ashley sight in particular ? Is this sight one where you can accurately change settings without having to re-sight in ? What about the original bolt mounted peep sights ? Imagine they would be like trying to find rocking horse doo doos, but are they any good ? Robustness, ability to change settings etc ? They do look pretty neat. Views & opinion most welcome. Joe The Redfields are class all the way. The same company made the Olympic target/ match reciever sights for decades. The Redfields are similar in operation to the Lyman except they are all blued machined steel. There are two versions for each rifle target and hunting. The target version has the flat target knobs for windage and elevation, the hunting variant has rounded, domed shaped knobs other wise they they are the same. Should you look for one on Ebay what you want is the sight for a Winchester 94. I suspect that one of the sights with a target base could be machined to work also. Good luck. I like the Williams sights, especially the FP and all my levers wear one. I haven't had any durability issues with the Williams (or Lyman) sights, and I don't personally know anyone who has broken one. Ashley/XO makes a good sight, and a lot of people like them. I've personally never been fond of a true ghost ring and prefer to use a large Lyman or Williams aperture for hunting and a smaller aperture for target work. This is simply personal preference and the ghost ring style works well for a lot of people.
