I've been offered a Winchester Model 1895 as a gift. It is missing the buttstock and possibly some action parts and is probably, in the "well used" condition. The guy giving it to me says that it has a long barrel with wood to nearly the end of the barrel and a bayonet lug on it. He also said that the barrel is stamped "7.62 M/M", I'm assuming that this is one of the Czarist Russian contract rifles. Is this rifle worth attempting to restore and are parts available for it, if so, where? "I ask, sir, what is the Militia? It is the whole people. There are a few different ways you could go. First strip the rifle down to just the reciever, rebarrel in the caliber of your choice replacing what ever action parts are needed for the new caliber. New stock, refinish and you have a custom 1895. 2. Assuming the bbl is still shootable, do what it takes to get the rifle in shooting condition. 3. Do number 2 above then modify the rifle to a handier sporitized condition. If it was me I would prefer number 2 [if the bl was still good] as I like to keep rifles like this in their original condition for nastalga. There should be a lot of surplus 7.62x54 ammo around making it fairly cheap to shoot. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

I see parts for the Winchester 1895 all the time on ebay. If this rifle has a shootable bore, it would most definatly be worth your time to restore it to it's originality. The price for these rifles as collector Winchesters, has really increased in the past few years. My thoughts are to keep it as original as possable and put it back togather again. If you need help on parts, I do have some and I have outlets for most all parts. Just my thoughts. RB

Wildcat - Thanks for the information and advice. My idea was to restore it as best I could. I have been out to Numrich's website and they do have some parts but a lot of them are cartridge specific. I'll have to wait until I get this rifle to determine what I will need other than a buttstock and buttplate. I'll check e-bay from time to time. Thank you all for your help and advice.
