I know where a real nice 300 Savage is at. It has not been drilled and tapped for a scope it is stamped Savage 99 and below it the caliber 300 Savage. Anyhow I could not find the model on it. The sling swivle is on the barrel and it has the schnabel forend I know I misspelled it and it is checkered. It is at a pawn shop and they have Model EG on the sale tag. I pulled the serial number and I ran it one site said it was made after 1918 and another said 1951? So I have know idea when it was made. So getting to my question is it worth the 400 dollar price tag. Like I said this rifle is in excellent shape one of the nicer ones I have seen in years. Here is the serial number if anyone wants to give it shot 674265 to see when it was made. John Handmade paracord rifle slings: paracordcraftsbypatricia@gmail.com

I would say it is an EG model from your brief description and was made in the '50's. On the lever boss there is an alpha numeric stamp in an oval. The date can be determined by this as the letter "a" was introduced in 1949 and was advanced year by year, ie; 20E denotes 1953. The swivels aren't factory and it would have to be really, really nice to fetch $400 as this was the most common chambering in the EG.

A Savage 99EG in 300 Savage is worth $400 or a bit more, most are asking about $550 today..I would buy it if I were you and its in excellent condition... Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

Iron Buck do you know where that lever boss code info comes from ? I just got a savage 99 marked 99M its a 308 winchester with a monte carlo stock serial # is 1144XXX and in the oval the lever boss code is 9j so if the info above is correct i beleive it was manufactured in 1958. Not sure what model it is i am told just model 99 and that the M is for the monte carlo stock. It also came with an old weaver 4x scope . My friend has it and i will pick it up next month i hope to try it on deer this fall. Later Tanoose

Inasmuch as the gun you describe is NOT D5T, then it is the early gun and not a 50s gun...All later guns were d & T... Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

Tanoose, Your rifle is a Savage Model 99M as stated, probably made in 1958, it will have a monte carlo but the M does not stand for Monte Carlo, tang safty, high gloss finish, no schenable forend, gold trigger and safty, some had cut checker but most had impressed checkerin g as I recall..designed for scope use...very common production item, and came in .308, 243, 284 calibers and I have been told a few in .300 Savage but I have not seen one in that caliber. Serial # above 1,000,000 marked 99M doesn't sound like 1958 production to me, is it lever safety or tang ??

By "D5T," do you mean D&T? If so, you're incorrect. Savage didn't start D&T'ing the Model 99 until 1954 or so, around serial number 700K.

This is also incorrect. The "M" does indeed indicate a monte carlo stock. The 99M was actually cataloged and sold as the Model 99DL. These were all produced AFTER 1960. I have absolutely no idea where you came up with the 1958 date.

Your pricing is WAY off. $400 for an unfooled with 99EG is a good deal anywhere. If the swivels were done professionally, I wouldn't sweat that in the least.
