I am buying a Model '95 Winchester from Cabela's in .405Win. Question I have is how to determine dates of manufacture?
It's one of the new run, built in Miroku Japan. As near as I can find out they built the .405's in 2000 and 2001 but I just wondered if anyone would be able to point me in the right direction.
I suppose once the gun arrives the date of manufacture might be included with the literature...

The .35 Whelen is a great caliber, but I think it is heresy to rebarrel an 1895 Winchester.

Just get the '95 chambered in .35WCF instead.

Check this link; mentions several 1895 conversions.

I have one of the new made Winchester take down 1895's in 405 WCF.
I like it a lot.

In fact I have it with me now in Idaho and will be carrying it some of the days I am bear hunting.

I will be using North Fork 300gr bullets.

N E 450 No2 if you are using North Forks then they are obviously handloads. What is your recipe?

I think the takedown 405's came later than that. I want to say 2004-2005. I know they came after the fixed frame 405's were already out. If you give Davidson's a call, they'll probably be able to tell you, since they commissioned the model.

Just a question without any judgemental over tones.
What difference does it make? You've got 20 to 50 years to wait for it to become an antique.

Hello gents.

What kind of accuracy at 100 yards could one expect from a 95 in, say, 9.3x62 caliber with a good set of peep sights. Thanks.

Cheers

I am using 54.5 gr of IMR 3031 with the 300gr North Forks.

They shoot good enough that I do not feel the need to try any thing else.

Why IMR 3031??? Because I have a bunch of it. Big Grin

According to my Hornady manual IMR-3031 is right in the "sweet spot" for the .405Win.
Also H-4895, which I have and use in .45-70, .458 Lott etc...
I am contemplating buying some 300gr BARNES X to load in my 1895 and trying the H4895. H-335 would also probably work and I've got some of that too.

Wooooooooo Hoooooooooooo!!! dancing

I just checked and the Cabela's site finally shows my gun as being SOLD!

Which means the paper process has been approved! Now hopefully it is just a matter of shipping time to receive the rifle!! dancing

Also I received my order of bullets, dies, brass etc the other day. I'll be able to work on the bench and get some bullets made up.

I made the mistake of telling somebody on the phone that I had "too many different 50's and needed to sell one or two..." Little pitchers have big ears...
She's pretty cool about my gun habit, but that was an "oopsie" on my part.

I've got one of the fixed barrel, color case recievers in 405.
Twas interesting going into the local shops looking for brass and bullets, for the 405.
Found a life time supply of brass on Ebay, bought a life time supply of Hornady blems, got Mountain molds to make me a 350 grain bullet mold, found a NEI mold on Ebay.
The cast bullets do so well that, for me there's no reason to shoot jacketed.
IMR 4895 and IMR 3031 are the powders to use.
I use Redding dies, with the Hornady super duper whiz bang seater, what ever they named it. It works great.
Will advise that a recoil pad will be appreciated. A Lyman, Redfield reciever will improve your accuracy over the buckhorns.

Never weaken guys, my wife through both hands up and gave up about 40 years ago, but the first 14 years of mirage was a marred bliss over my gun addiction...just hang and never weaken, they will see the light and surrender to the fate, but it won't come cheap! Smiler Smiler

Guys
Wives and firearms are very similar, sometimes you need to do a bit of trading to get the one you really want.

It should arrive in a day... or maybe even today, but I hope not.

I needs to intercept it before the wife sees it! Eeker
