I have a pre-64 Winchester 88. Made in 1957. Previous owner put a Pachmeyer pad on it but did not cut the stock. I want to put an originl butt palte back on it. I see 2 types out there, one with all checkering and 1 with round Winchester logo in the middle of checkering. Which is correct for my rifle? US Navy RETIRED NRA LIFE MEMBER

The buttplate that you need for your early Model 88 will have WINCHESTER wrote in the center on line from top to bottom. The two that you mention are not correct for your rifle. Your rifle should have the early flat bottom magazine, and the dolls head tang. Your gun is most likely a .308. Some say that they made as many guns after the first year in .243, but I highly doubt that. You see many more .308's then .243's of course the .284, and the .358 are even rarer.

Thanks for the reply. Yes it's a 308. Somewhere in the past a pad was added but did not cut the stock so I'm trying to go back to original. Now just have to find one of those plates. US Navy RETIRED NRA LIFE MEMBER
