Would it be feasible to rechamber a Marlin 35 Rem to 356 Win.? Iassume that the action will handle this cartridge as Marlin offered the 356 for awile.

Stoney could be done,of course 35 rem. is rimless and 356 has a small rim.May be easier to convert to 358,see if the case will fit bolt head and extractor without too much modification, if any.I used to have a win. 356 and reloaded 358 cases, the extractor handled them fine, being real careful of headspace and nothing too hot.

People have rechambered Marlin 35's to 358. No need to bother with the rimmed 356 case. Case dimensions are identical except for the rim. Seems like I read an article somewhere on the internet about somebodies conversion. You might try a search on it.

Wildcat - You brought up a good point! I did not know that Marlin listed the receiver part number for the full spectrum of low to high intensity rounds for the model 336. I was always told that the model 336 was designed for cartidges of no more than 44,000CUP; however, as you point out, the .356 and .307 were in the 50,000CUP category. Are we to believe that one can use higher pressure rounds if the cases are made stronger? Or, is the action the limiting factor in loading the cartridge? Clay Harvey stated (paraphrase) "The .35Rem is underloaded and it is no trick to improve its velocity by 100-150fps without stretching things". Taking the cartridge from 33,000psi (SAMI) TO 38,000psi (normal 30/30 pressures) will give you 100fps+. I have owned several .35Rem's that easily reach 2150fps with a 200gr bullet and 2040fps with a 220gr FN Speer. Given my assumption that the action will take the 44,000CUP that the .444Marlin dishes out, I don't think I am hurting the action a bit, and according to the easy extraction and lack of case stretching (or other indications) nor am I over doing the pressure. Now if I am reading you right, if I can get my hands on some cases that will contain 50,000CUP or PSI I can make my Marlin 336 equal the .358Win (assuming a case with larger case capacity than the .35Rem of course). It would be interesting to find out what Marlin says the maximum working pressure that the 336 will handle. Thanks for your info. Riley

I wonder what the .356 Win. is really loaded to in pressure? Looking in Winchester's #15 loading booklet, they show the .35 Rem. loaded to a max of 33,000 C.U.P., the .356 Win. loaded to a max of (GET THIS!) 31,000 C.U.P. with W-748 and 27,500 C.U.P. with W-760.
Ther .358 Win. is loaded to 50,000 C.U.P. with W-748 and 50,500 with W-760.
The .356 is loaded to less pressure than the .35 Rem.????????
I used that data because it is Winchester's round, they developed it. Niether the 47th or 48th editions of the Lyman manual even carry data for the .356.

Accurate Arms lists loading data for the .356 Win.,their highest pressure load for the .356 Win. is 46,600 C.U.P.
40 grs. of 2230 with a 220 gr.bullet gives a MV of 2228 fps.
at 46,600 C.U.P.

Accurate lists a load for the .375 Win. at a pressure of 50,800 C.U.P.

Apparently Marlin was going to put out a .307 winchester along with the .356 but the pressure was too much for the receiver. They would have had to redesign it so they dropped the .307.

I think loading the .35 to higher pressures is a good alternative, as well as the .358 route, as long as you download it.
