I guess from the picture of the old Winchester it was without a scope too, which is pretty impressive.

You guess wrong. It clearly states it was with a Winchester telescope. I can never guess the size of photo groups. The last target I just looked at of mine (Random, Honestly) was a 77-22 Ruger 90 metres 1 7/8" 10 shot, BR. ammo prob. cci Mini-Mag, wind unrecorded, but never calm in this burg. Oh and a 9x scope.

v Don, I suppose that might be, but my .22 rifle was made in 1887, has no fee floated barrel, and it will easily out shoot that target. The ammo of today is considerably better and probably a bigger difference than the rifle. Barrels were quite good then, but mine rotted so it has a new barrel. Brent, You're right. Those old barrels would shoot with today's ammo, so I expect those poor groups were ammo related. Don

I shoot my .22 ruger 77 at 100 yds often. I shoot at a home made swinging target that has 1" discs I also shoot at 3" Knock downs at 100 yds. I do this when shooting my bigger centerfire rifles to calm myself and to bring good form back to my mental. On a calm windless day with the sun just right shooting at a white paper targets you can see the bullets dropping through the paper through the scope. It is just plain FUN!!! ________________________________________________ Maker of The Frankenstud Sling Keeper Proudly made in the USA Acepting all forms of payment

Happey New Year to all. Well the talk about the movement of the bullet when it regress through the sound barrier made me go do some more reading on the subject. I have shot long range high power matches before and have heard this often repeated. Many years ago I read a story in the Rifleman (I think) The jist of the story was the Army was unhappy with the accuracy of the .308 because it wouldn’t group at 1000 yards as well as the 3006 in the old Springfield’s. They supposedly put up large sheets of paper starting at 700 yards (I don’t remember the exact spacing but I think it was 25 yards) to 1000 yards. They found the standard 147 gr bullet became subsonic at around 700 yards and made a decided juke in a random direction. This accounting for the poor accuracy. The supersonic shock wave is behind the bullet and when it slows down it moves forward of the bullet when it is subsonic. This causes the buffeting. I have seen this demonstrated on aircraft models in wind tunnels. The thing to do is use a bullet design that has enough BC to make it through the target supper sonic. The interesting thing is the old shutsen shooters shot some amazing 200 yd targets with all the loads starting subsonic. On a fun note hear is a link that a friend sent of Fleet Week in San. Fran. This is 3 passes on 3 different days by the Blue Angles. You can clearly see the shockwave, he isn’t supersonic so it is not behind the ac. You can see it disturbing the water as he passes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7rAUu8djZ4 Bill Member DSC,DRSS,NRA,TSRA A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way. -Mark Twain There ought to be one day - just one – when there is open season on Congressmen. ~Will Rogers~

Hear are two other interesting test on 22 ammo I wonder if we had chronograph data at 100 yards if it might show anything interesting. http://www.lasc.us/RangingShot15-1.htm http://www.gunsandammomag.com/ammunition/subsonic_100507/index2.html#cont Bill Member DSC,DRSS,NRA,TSRA A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way. -Mark Twain There ought to be one day - just one – when there is open season on Congressmen. ~Will Rogers~

Bill That's really interesting information and the change of speed to subsonic and the effects of that change on the bullet flight. Do you happen to have a reference to what issue of the Rifleman that article might be in?
