When I bought my Ruger Mk III Target stainless in .22LR I had forgotten the tales about the terrible trigger weight. And it's terrible. I know there are trigger kits like Volquartsen...are they difficult to install? Had head something about that.
I have put parts into 10/22 actions plenty of times but wasn't sure about the Mk III.

Being a Ruger MKII / III fanatic I have worked on a few over the years. Here is what I have been doing lately.

#1 I replace the trigger. I prefer the Clark Custom Guns Steel Ruger Trigger over the Volquartsen (personal preference). The Clark Custom Guns Steel Ruger Triggers come slightly oversized and need to be fitted to the individual receiver they are going in. This is a simple matter of filing down their width at the pivot point. The main reason I prefer the Clark is the shape and the fact that I fit it to my receiver so I end up with little to no side to side play like is common with the Ruger Factory Triggers.

#2 I install a Volquartsen Custom Ruger Target Sear. The Volquartsen is slightly different size and shape thus changing the geometry slightly creating a really great feeling trigger pull.

#3 I polish the engagement notch on the Ruger Factory Hammer and reduce it's depth slightly.

On the Rugers I have done this to this procedure has produced super crisp & smooth trigger feel with pull weights 2 pounds of in some cases slightly less.

I have installed a few of the Volquartsen Accurizing Kits over the years for different guys and to be honest I have had to do a little polishing on the Volquartsen Hammer anyway to get the pull feel & weight desired.

Good luck

Thanks Larry. From a rested position this pistol produces some fair groups, but from a bullseye or even a two-handed stance it is no fun with the original trigger. I'm not accomplished at working surfaces on trigger components so will try to stick to parts replacement - maybe I need to branch out.

The 5 1/2" Stainless-Steel Bull Barrel Ruger MKII I have was made back in 1992. It is easily one of the most accurate .22 LR Handguns I have ever had, including Smith & Wesson Model 41's. The modifications I did to this old Ruger just made it easier for me to shoot.

This past winter I completed the makeover by replacing the old 1" Illusion Red Dot Optical Sight with a new Burris FastFire Sight & Mount. This makes the Ruger handle much like it did with Open Sights on it as far as weight and balance, but my 50 + year old eyes see the Red Dot Sight much better than open sights.

Just this Friday night, I installed a Volquartsen accurizing kit on my own MKIII and one on a friend's as well. It is not too difficult or I would not have been able to do it. The exploded parts view that came with the pistol was a big help, as was the video in their site that routes to youtube.com. It does take much longer than the five minutes the guy in the video does it in though. I lost a part for a while which slowed me down even more. To me, they are worth the effort.
