I thought I would share what I think is a great starter 22LR for youngsters and I hope others have others examples to share as well.

I recently purchased a little Savage Rascal .22 single shot bolt rifle. The thing is absolutely kid sized. The LOP is only 11.25". That might seem short to some but I tried a rifle with a 12" LOP and my ten year old couldn't keep it in his shoulder to get a decent sight picture. The Rascal fits to a tee.

The Rascal comes with a peep sight on the rear receiver bridge. There is no other rear sight. The peep has a good sized aperture and is easily adjusted for windage and elevation. The reason I like this setup so much is that all my boy has to do is line up the front bead in the center of the circle he is looking through and put that on the target. I fired several shots and adjusted the sight. Then I handed it to my boy and he had no trouble getting a proper sight picture. It is drilled and tapped for scope mounts but the peep is so nice I don't think I'll ever put a scope on this rifle.

The barrel is 16.25" and the weight is less than 2-3/4 pounds! The Rascal uses the Savage accutrigger and I was surprised at how nice a trigger it is, especially for a little index finger. The rascal is offered with plastic stock choices of red, pink, yellow, blue, green, brown or black. I was worried that a blue or red rifle would cause him to think of the rifle as a toy instead of a firearm. So, I purchased black.

Here is a catalog picture of the Rascal.

Here is my son shooting a clay disk from a standing position with the Rascal. Next we will be working on a supported prone position and then we will progress from there.

So, what are you others finding useful for starter rifles?

The little Savage Rascal got a great review in a recent edition of our NZ Guns and Hunting magazine. I scanned the articles lead photo to send to my two youngest grandsons, 2 & 4 years old, to ask if this would be the next expectation from Granddad as I had recently given them a set of the ear muffs shown in the photo to go with the toy Stihl chainsaws they got.

I know the kids will grow (and are growing all the time), but it looks to me as if the stocks are too long (LOP). Could a person cut about 3 or 4 inches off the butt and add them back incrementally as the kid grew?

I got the same rifle(in Pink)for my daughter for Christmas. She loves it! She would rather go shooting than anything else, shooting is our special time that we spend together.

My son has and older model Savage youth rifle.

These little .22's are great to get the kids into shooting.
