Has anyone on here ever actually contacted Remington and asked them why they won't run another batch of 5mm ammo?? Just curious as to what their reasoning might be. There's still a ton of rifles out there and N.O.S. ammo is $1-$2/round when you can find it. I can't think that the shooting world wouldn't jump on every piece of new 5mm ammo they'd run if you could get them to do it. Founder....the OTPG

With all of the hype of "subcalibers" and apparent success of the rimfire .17's, along with the astounding success of the .204 Ruger, there ought to be some interest in bringing back the 5mm (.20 cal) Remington. If a major manufacturer were to chamber the 5mm in a popular rifle, I suspect there would be a lot of takers (which, of course, would translate into revived sales of ammunition for both the new and the old guns.)

I think Remington used a bullet that was a little heavy for its caliber in order to reduce wind drift. As a result the velocity was not high enough to get attention in the magnum age. I suspect it is a very sound round ballistics wise. If the odd ball extractor design was really a necessity it killed the chance of other rifles being chmbered for it. The toy like bolt handle of the original rifle did not help either.

I just wish everyone would let this thing die peacefully. It was tried, it wasn't popular, it didn't make the company any money, they canned it, end of story. Just like what's happened to a million other cartridge designs over the last 120+ years.

One very big reason is that the 5mm is based on the .25 rimfire case and not the .22 Magnum. The tooling was sold off in the 70's and IIRC it was Aquila that ended up with it but I'm not certain on that part. Every once and a while, the rumors fly about someone like Old West Scrounger getting a run made but because the minimum order is one million rounds, it does not happen. At least that's what the rumors say. Me, I'd like to see a new .25 magnum rimfire round and the 5mm come back. The beauty of the second amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it. -- Thomas Jefferson http://tcbunch.com

What I don't get, though, is why, after the boom of .17 caliber rimfires, the 5mm hasn't popped back up. The 5mm Rem. is quite ballistically superior to both the .17 HMR and the .22 Mag. Straight from the OWS.........They are not going to have a run of the 5mm ammo made. Too costly. End of story. Founder....the OTPG

It's like a lot of stuff I guess. Just because it didn't sell doesn't mean it wasn't a good thing. Either too far ahead of it's time and the buying public weren't ready, too expensive, bad publicity, lack of choice.....any number of reasons really. Fact is that it didn't sell for whatever reason and that was that. Time to move on. At least with the 17HMR you'll still get ammo for it 20yrs from now ...haha

I've had a couple Rem. 5mm mags and i still have one in LEFT HAND.. Actually i think the 5mm mag. is a new case all of it's own... AND, i used it a LOT, waaay back when. At that time it easily out did the 22 Win. mag., as there weren't many choises in Win. mag. ammo back then... These days Win. mag. ammo has got much better with many more choises... BTW, anyone want some 5 mm Rem mag. ammo for $75.00 per box, i have some... DM

Many of these old rifles are being successfully revived in 5mm Craig. A centerfire conversion that does not require a rechamber, simply a bolt nose change out. The opinion of 10,000 men is of no value if none of them know anything about the subject. - Marcus Aurelius -
