they do work but have less over all punch"hitting power" than a 22 mag i went thru this debate years ago the 17 will work but i highly recomend head shots only and all shot be taken 100 yards and in also use nothing but the 20 grain game load or the 17 grain cci tnt as it has a heavy jacket not the exploding varmint bullet its far to explosive for any real penetration if you had a 22 mag how ever range is extended to 135-140 yards heads shots only or a heart lung shot with a real nice 30g+ bullet. to date iv killed around 78-80 coyote with a 22 mag over the years iv even seen a wolf killed with a double lung shot with a 17 hmr the wolf ran 120 yards then piled up her lungs were fucked right over.
dont use to light of a bullet google coyote hunting with a 22 mag and even there that gentle man uses a winchester sumpreme 34 grain hollow point bullet it kills them out right
bullet weight kills but with out enuff weight to get it there into the vitals its usless.

i just saw this on youtube and figured you might like this its 17 hmr shooting a raw dead head meat on at 50 yards or less you can see by the distruction that would be 1 dead deer
no problem also rimfire central has a wealth of information on the 17 hmr and ammunition but that vamint als site pretty much sums it up i just wish he did penetration test with more of the new loads
basicly the 17 grain poly tip bullets = max expolisivness
17 grain cci tnt has a thicker jacket a controled expansion but still explodes but penetration is increased say 50%
20 grain xtp and 20 grain game points are basicly identical with the xtp maybe having a touch more penetration and the 20 grain fmj load are just the best if max penetration is needed right now i still have 600 20 grain xtp's left i picked up a box of a the 20 grain fmjs and they seem to kill real nice exp on the bigger stuff coyotes ,pigs ect i even put a horse down with it and the kill was instant ususing the 20 grain xtp and side brain shot

well I was going to pick up some more 20gr XTPs and also some 20gr Game Points to try out so I will try and do some penitration tests and such get pics and see if I can get some help posting them.. will try them on differnt medieas
i stoped using dead material to test bullets years ago and by dead i mean wood, paper, carboard ,water bottles ect..
my favorite way to to test ammunition is by trapping coyotes and shooting them in the traps
because i can also test heart lung shots with out worrying if ill find the animal its in a foot hold/neck snare. the xtps and game points leave good size exit holes on head shots from pretty much any angle so far holes have adveraged the size of a nickle/dime dont underestimate the killing power of the 20 grain fmjs they will zip right thru most things iv had them pas thru wolves on lung shots 1 shot tight to the leg and death comes under 30-40 seconds

I bought a case of 20gr XTP horandys today and started using a comparator gage on the rims and found the ones that shoot the best.. been getting 8 shot string inside of .655" at 100 yards and then took the same ammo and shot a piece of cold roll square tubing 2" with a 3/16” thick wall and at 100 yards it leaves one heck of a dent in it.
ahhhh yeah trust me bro that 20 grn bullet will really make a hogs/varmints or what ever elses day go real bad with head shots made with those
the xtps works fine on heart lung shots as well on yotes and smaller stuff on hogs if there small enuff you could heartlung em but id still stick with head shots
the 20 grain fmj loads are just awsome once my ammo supply starts to go down a bit maybe in another week im defintly going to buy 1000-2000 rounds of the 20 grain fmj just because there that good.

I have yet to shoot a coyote with the 17 HMR 20gr XTP but i did shoot a very nice Red Fox with it at 130yrds put the shot just behind the sholders and had a pass thru shot but the Fox made it 35 yards pefor going and flipping over I am getting the hide tanned... Also a few Gray and Fox squirrels have now meet their fait with htis round the 20gr XTPs if shot in the hart lung area dose not kill instently and the run or bug out but head shots rule... the 17gr V-Max works better for hart lung area on the smaller game but blows the crap out of them... so Head shots for every smaller animal and with the 20gr XTP head shots on larger game
hit them in a vital area, inside of 200 yards and that's is a dead yote.
I won't say DRT, they are tough, and if you want to drop them on the spot, you need more energy or a CN shot, but if your goal is simply that they die, blast away, they will die.

yeah those 17 grainers tend to mess stuff up a bit thats why i stick with the 20's i have mesured up to 18" of penetration in flesh with the 20 grain xtp i killed a nice female wolf with it a few weeks back with a double lung shot at around 70 yards i couldnt get a clear view of the head and i wasnt about to let 500$ in fur walk away from me so i shot her she ran about 40-50 yards then floped over dead as a door nail.

you think the groups might get better with the hevyer barrel ??
i have the savage 93 btvlss with the thumb hole stock left handed heavy target 21" barrel in 17 hmr the heavy barrel always makes a diff i never buy rifles with sporter or light weight barrels sincle they will never come no weres as accurate as my heavy barrels
