Need a nice scope for an Anzchutz Sporter .22lr. I gave the rifle to my grandson but th eold socpe on it went tit's-up and he needs another. Any suggestions -- like to keep it as much under $200 as possible.

Bill ,
I have used a 2x7 Leupold vx2 for many years on an older Anschutz . It has always worked fine, mine is a hunting plinker not a target rifle. Any good low power should be fine for critters. The cheaper Nikons seem nice as well. Good luck

There's nothing wrong with the old fixed power Leupold M8s and usually the 4x can be had for around $125 off flea-bay and a little more ($140 or so)off Gunbroker. Send it back to Leupold and for $15 they'll set the parallax to 60 yds and go over it for free... can't beat that and you can even get the nice glossy purple finish if you get one old enough...{*>Wink... also available in 6x for a slight premium ($25-$0 more)

Almost anyone's fixed power scope will be quite functional on a .22; even the cheap Chinese crap does amazingly well in a fixed scope. Where they get into trouble is trying to make things still work when varying magnification is introduced.

That being said, however, there is so little difference in a used Leupold 4x (compact or later generation short tube preferred) and a new "brand X" scope that you might be best served by looking for the Leupold.

If you feel the need for more power or a variable, then definately spend up to your dollar limit on a used Leupold. You can probably find a Compact 2-7X within that limit, possibly even in the parallax-adjusted Rimfire model. Regardless, the regular model with its longer- range parallax correction works fine on a .22 rimfire.

Hey DB, I swapped for a Weatherby Mark XXII(aka Anschutz M64) a couple of months ago. Put a Leupold 3-9x EFR on it like MrFudd mentioned and it looked real nice.

Recently took it off and put a "High Class" hilbily $69.95 6-24x Optronics on it to do Ammo Testing with. It sure looks different than the small Leupold. Eeker

Once I find how the various types of Ammo shoot, chances are the Optronics will move again. tu2

I mounted a Leupold 4-12 Vari-X II AO on top of my 1710.

I had a Burris 6xHBR/PA on my Anschutz 1416LD, but replaced it with a Burris FF 3x-9x Compact for more versatility.

I wound up buying him a Nikon 3-9x40mm RF with a BDC reticle for the various bullet weights.

Took a little while to figure out which ammo it liked and then find out at what distance the small circles would hit POA -- on a quiet day with no coffee I can make empty pop cans fly when set up out past 150 yards --- wouldn't have believed it I didn't see it my self.

I'm in the process of putting a couple more .22's together --- (1) a custom 10-22 for me chambered in .22WMR, and (2) a semi-custom for the other grandkids to share until I'm convinced they'll stay with it and then they'll get their own.
