This is a 1985 vintage rifle. I have an older 1 to 4 vari-X II Leupold gloss to put on it. What mounts should I use??? It is such a beautiful rifle...I want some nice gloss blue mounts.

It drilled and tapped and has the clamp-on rail too. Thinking of some Talley rimfire specialty rings.

What do y'all recommend?

Both Leupold and Burris tip-off rings are all steel and nice. Millett is also all steel and they are windage adjustable, which can come in handy sometimes.

I bought a set of Burris. And while they do technically clamp on...they just barely do and they are unstable. The top of the female part of the dove-tail cut in the Burris is flat and the top receiver is round. The clamping edges just barely catch and if you are not careful as you tighten...the can cant off to either side. I would like something machined to fit to a bit closer tolerances.

I've a pair of these on my Anschutz L/H 22lr.

They may be of interest to you, inexpensive, solid lock-up and IMO they're a good match with the rifle's bluing despite their finish described as "matte black" as I've got a gloss scope to match the rifle as well.

I encountered the same issue with both the Leupold & Burris mounts; while all of them claimed they are compatable with 3/8" & 11mm my opinion was otherwise, BKL delivered.

I have the same mounts on an Anschutz.

I ended up buying the Talley. Just a little more refined to my taste. I will post a pic later.

I bought this Savage/Anschutz 54 Sporter .22 LR as a second hand rifle. The sights have been removed. The screw-holes in the barrel for the front sight are small and of an unusual dimension. I think they are 5's. 6-48's are too big and I tried some 4-40 machine screws I had and they will screw in but seem a tad loose and I never see any 4's being used much for sights. I have found some rifles using 5's but can't remember the thread count.

Anyway...does anybody know what size screws these should be or how to find out???

I'm pretty confident in assuming the threads on an Anschutz will be metric.

The sights are still on my rifle and I'll take a gander at the front sight when I get some time this afternoon (gotta buy a battery for Mrs. Gerry's auto and you know what kinda priority issues like this have!) to see what I can determine.

Several options:

I'll check my spare parts inventory in the basement (it's considerable).

Florian; my super Buddy German Buchsenmacher has enough screws in his shop to rivet the Titanic back together and I'll see what he can offer me to mail to you for screw hole plugs.

Option #3 is a phone call away to Anschutz in Ulm.

..... or if you desire we can probably without too much difficulty replace the original sights w/screws?

I guess I should clarify my goal. I either want to replace the sight with an authentic front sight or I would like some filler screws to put into the holes.

Was looking for some filler screws but can't figure out the size. The factory drilled scope-mount holes on the receiver are just standard 6-48's.

Gottcha!

Black RTV in a syringe might be the quick and easy solution.

If there is a machinist or gunsmith in your area they can determine the right size threaded rod/screw for your application and cut them to size.

Lane, for future reference the Millett mounts will fit most European grooved .22's better than the Burris or Leupold. The Milletts have more latitude in the clamp and are also adjustable for windage. However, it looks like the Talley's fit pretty nice on your Savage/Anschutz.
