U.S. property Stevens 416 target good bore heavy barrel in .22LR
I was offered a nice looking Stevens 416 .22LR with fine peep sights. I have never seen this model before. Walnut looked nice, steel butt plate, but the action was much better then my CZ feel wise. Any one owned or shot one? He is asking $200. If I bought it I would shoot it as is due to the fine sights.

That's an excellent buy if the rifle is in good condition. I've seen them at gun shows listed for $400-550, depending on condition.

I own one, which came with the original sights plus a Redfield 3200 24x scope. With the right ammo, it averages 0.51" for 10 five-shot groups at 50 yards off the bench. Someone who can actually read wind would do better, I'm sure.

The Savage historian doesn't have information on individual serial numbers, but if I recall the conversation correctly, these rifles were manufactured from about 1937-48 and about 17,000 of them were made, of which about 10,000 ended up as U.S. Property. A number of them were sold to Sears Roebuck (I think) and will be found marked as "Ranger". There were three variations, distinguished only by the original sights and scope bases.

The magazine is still available, although it will be listed as for another Stevens model which I cannot recall.

Have fun with it.

40X Have you looked at the complex trigger set up to tell how to adjust it? The rifle shoots so sweet and with just open sights. Trouble with mine is the trigger is too light. I need to adjust it a little heaver. This is some great fun to shoot. My 416 has no serial number at all.

A lot of rifle shotguns and handguns made before 1968 had no serial numbers on them.

I've never adjusted mine, as it was fine right out of the shipping carton from the prior owner. I did buy an additional magazine for it and have since transferred the Redfield 3200 to another rifle. When I shoot the Stevens, I use the irons now.
