If price was no issue, what would be the best scope for a rimfire?

What would you want to do with it?

If it is a standard 10/22 just about any scope will do! If has a custom or match barrel then you would want an excellent 50 yard scope AND MOUNT to wring the best out of it.

I like Leupolds, nice enough. You might want to check the focus on a prospective scope at shorter ranges; something like a 6-20X may have to have an extended focus lens added for shooting 50-foot 3-position matches (or squirrels up a tree).

The Weaver V series have worked out well for me, I prefer the v-16 it has paralax adjustment down to, I believe, 20 yards and enough adjustment to shoot out to 200 yards with 15 MOA bases.

i would like to hunt with it and a bit of plinking. it is a custom 10/22 with all the bells and whistles so putting on a cheap scope just wouldn't make sense

I agree with you and on TomP on the focus. Looks like Leupold makes a couple of EFR models: http://swfa.com/EFR-C109.aspx

Otherwise, if you like European scopes the Zeiss Conquest HD5 has a wide focus range too- there's a 2-10x model and a 3-15x with side parallax adjustment. Haven't used one of those myself though.

Seeing how you have a nice rifle, I'd put on a nice scope with great parallax control and a lot of elevation range, for those long shots. I use a Leica ER 3.5-14x42 IBS scope. It's effective close rage is from 10 yards (3.5x power)to 25 yards (3.5-5x power) and it's full power range is available at about 35 yards. The longest shot I've taken with a 50 meter zero is 200 meters. At that distance I had to use the lowest line/dot in the ballistic reticle to make the shot (clay shotgun pigeon), but it works.

BTW, The 200 meter shots were made at approximately 6x power. This is relevant because the reticle is positioned in the rear or second focal plane; so the reticle does not change dimensions when the scope's magnification is dialed up or down.

If price were no issue, I'd find a high-end Leupold with a power range I liked. Then, I'd send it to their custom shop and have them install a reticle I liked and adjust the parallax to the distance I wanted. Personally, I'd select a side focus scope.

I speak from having shot a fully tricked-out Anschutz. The guy who had it spared no expense either in customizing the rifle or scope, then went through every brand of ammo he could lay his hands on to find what shot best.

How good was the combination? Well, he stuck 5 BBs in tiny daubs of liquid nails atop the edge of a target backboard at 50 yards, and I myself hit 4 of those BBs in 4 shots without touching the wood. (It took me 2 shots to hit the 5th BB).

I have an older Bushnell Trophy 4-12x40 PA on my target 10/22. I use it for squirrels, pest birds, and an occasional racoon. It has worked well for over 10 years.

3-9X Leupold would be perfect for it.
