Friend bought believe 3 of these barreled/actions from CMP sometime ago and I have one and it does very well, so another one was sold to fellow shooter and scoped it and we put it through it's paces yesterday at 50 and 100yds. It is the heavier version barrel some 28" in length and did have the crown redone. Stock is the std. Rangemaster walnut with no bedding work and 6oz. trigger installed. Ammunition used was Federal Gold Medal(level below Ultra grade) and after zeroing shot for groups at both distances. No photos available, but the rifle would repeatedly deliver 5 shot groups at 50yds no more than two bullet diameters in size and some actually very little over one bullet hole in size. The 100yd. groups measured some .7" in size repeatedly. As some know these barreled actions could be had for very reasonable price and when you add PT&G complete bolt, surplus Rangemaster stock, match grade trigger end product is excellent for the investment. We went through some 4 boxes of ammo and spent most of the day there and when finished shooting the new owner asked me if there was anything else we should do to improve the performance of the rifle?? Told him that as long as the rifle performs as it did today would not change a thing. Due to the shooters age and health issues the 40X has provided him with enjoyment of shooting again and had to insist that we leave before it got dark. He has already called me and wants to go back this coming Saturday.

I kind of wish I'd gotten one when they were inexpensive; too late now. There is a history of that sort of thing though, I passed on an Olympic rimfire rifle back in the late 1980s at a gun show in Raleigh and have periodically kicked myself ever since.

I picked up one of the complete rifles from them several years ago. It shoots really well, I also picked up an H&R 12, a Remington 541X and two Mossberg M44's.

Too bad we didn't realize we were in the 'good old days' until it was too late. I see CMP currently has Win 52 heavy barreled receivers. Is there a source for 52 bolts?

I also wonder what happened to all of the bolts for these rifles? I presume the all started life with one. Why would they be removed and lost/destroyed etc.?

Stock on mine is almost done. After rust blue, I will be ready. Hopefully before summertime. A step by step on the stock.

That is a real nice project Butch, I joined a small town rifle and pistol club a year ago, I got a late start, I'm 69, I have several nice 22's but only one is competitive. It's a CZ 452 American and shoots better than I can hold it. Back to your project, how would you propose I build a 22 for the bench, our competition is purely casual without formal rules but there are a couple of pretty accurate rifles that compete. My CZ is close to competitive but the stock doesn't do the bench well. Its the narrow forend. I'd like to build a rifle like whats being talked about here only more bench friendly. Feel free to move this to it's own thread if I am out of line. DW

I didn't know they had them, might go looking for one. I wonder, how hard would it be to machine a bolt for a Winchester 52?

Work on wind doping, a a windy day you may do well if the guys with better guns fall prey to the wind.
Another path, work on customizing your rest and sandbags to fit the rifle. I went that route with a 513T and occasionally win a few targets.

I would buy or make an aluminum 3" wide plate for the front of the stock and get a trigger kit for your existing rifle. Get a couple bricks of good ammo and go for it. If you enjoy it, then start picking up pieces for a custom.

Thanks all, I am working on a walnut block that will fit the bags better. At the same time i'm working on bringing my semi custom 243 up to target specs. The CZ has a trigger kit in it, an old Japanese tasco 6-24. I bought a new rest and the bag I put on it fits both guns much better. I also bought some Ely club, I know its the bottom of the Eley barrel but it shrank by groups to barely over 1/2 at 50. I'll get it worked out where I am competitve. Thanks again.
