Haven't fooled much with 22 LR for a while. Decided to play with my old High Standard Military Citation today. Had 2 duds out of 50 rounds. Good firing pin indentations. Rounds did not go in two or more strikes. What is the best way to dispose of 22 rim fire duds? Thanks, Mike -------------- DRSS, Womper's Club, NRA Life Member/Charter Member NRA Golden Eagles ... I just chuck 'em into the nearest trash can. Even if they were to fire after being removed from the chamber the bullet doesn't come out with much force. It will only build up enough pressure to expel the bullet from the case.

before throwing them - stick them back in the gun so the firing pin hits in a new spot. found lots of times there is just a hollow in the priming compound in the rim

I have found quite a few live .22lr rounds at the range. I always just took the time to work the projectile out of the case, dumped the powder, then trashed the remnants. Didn't take long to pull those heeled bullets...

Put them in the campfire.

Trash can or lake does a good job of disposal. Jim "Whensoever the General Government assumes undelegated powers, its acts are unauthoritative, void, and of no force." --Thomas Jefferson

The old instructions included waiting a half-minute in case of hang-fire. I've never seen one, but wait anyway. The bullet can be pried off the case with a pair of pliers and the whole catridge disassembled. I also try a different spot on the rim, often works with ten-year-old ammunition that is no longer reliable. TomP Our country, right or wrong. Usually turn it over and try the other side of the rim. I have one that looks like it was never primed in my stuff. A bad day at the range is better than a good day at work.

Dig a hole, fill with water, add duds, fill with dirt. They'll be dead in less than a week. I tested some live rimfire ammo this way, it works.

Uh, I call BS! Explain the mechanism that will render a viable rimfire cartridge "dead" under the circumstances you described! ![]() I actually agree with Cain Rat. Toss them in the trash (but not the expended brass bucket). A cartridge (even when burned) is not that dangerous..... unless it's in the chamber of a firearm (or cylinder)!

The "mechanism" is the fact that 22 RF ammo is not water tight. The other "mechanism" is I'm the only guy who knows where they're buried.

You sure about that? I've done the water test with live .22lr ammo before...... and they ALWAYS go bang afterwards.

You need to soak them longer.
