Now that ammo is once again available, does anyone anticipate rebarreling their .22 WMR?

5mm ammo is once again on the shelves? It went away many, many years ago because it cost more than 22LR and with 22Mag just as available as 22LR, who needed it? My question is why did Remington (or whomever) decide to bring it back in an era of high metals prices and the possibility of a very anti-Freedom Congress?

Yes it is....the local gunshop has several bricks of it at $18 per box of 50.

For those of us with a 5mm rimfire we can once again shoot them......it's been 20 years or so since the ammo was made!

I did some measuring however and the 5mm rim is much larger than the 22 WMR so rebarreling would require action work as well.....not too likely anyone will be doing it.

We've got a couple of old Savage/Stevens single shot actions, have been considering a 5mm. Had one briefly back in the 70's, remember it as being accurate and hell on groundhogs. Glad to see it back, never like the .17 stuff all that much.

Anyone have a spare 591M for sale?

well according to the web rumor mill,cz,savage,rossi,tc are coming out with new rifles.Taurus shows on their website a 6" Tracker revolver in this caliber

I've heard savage and Marlin will make guns and now CZ is listed in Guns and Ammo mag as being the first to build a gun for the 5mm Rem Mag.

CZ will be offering a 452 American and Varmint in 5mm...

This being the case..........I just may have a DANDY 591M for sale. And a 592 as well.

Just one year ago you could pick one of these rifles up at a gun show for about $100 I see now they are about $250 on up. I am glad to see Centurion makeing the ammo I can now break mine out of hibernation from a long long nap!!

I was a huge fan of the 5mm way back when. But I am not that intrigued by the 30 grain offering. The original 38 grain loading was superb and well-balanced in terms of expansion and penetration. Perhaps additional offerings will be available should the 30 grainers sell well.

As to the article Snapper linked to, I must point out that there are a couple of errors in it.

First, the 5mm did not operate at twice the pressure of the .22 Magnum. Secondly, the original loading was a 38 grain PLHP and NOT a Core-Lock.

There's a certain price a guy's willing to pay for nostalgia, sometimes. Kinda like getting 5 mpg driving your old muscle car around town.

Gotta admit, though........sometimes (and in the case of the 5mm Mag) nostalgic things are just as useful in the here-and-now as they were years ago.

I have had an old beater, and I mean beater, 5mm for many years now and of course have not shot it much in the last 10 or 15 years as I only had a limited supply of ammo...I recently bought about 6 cases of this new stuff...I kept that old beat up gun for one reason only, it shoots under and inch at 100 yards everytime for 5 shot groups with a 2.5X scope on it..I just couldn't part with that kind of a rifle, ammo or not...Last week I shot 31 Rock chucks with 31 shots the longest shot was about 200 yards or a tad more...Day before yesterday I really pushed the string and on the second shot killed a chuck at a measured 291 long steps! I love this old beater...

Ray-It sounds like your rifle likes the new ammo pretty well.

I'm going to give it a shot later on when I dust off my old Remington 591, and I can only hope my results are as good as yours.

Guess I'll always be partial to that original 38-grain loading.

Mine is also a Rem 591???? the tubular magazine model, someone skinny uped the stock with a rasp and sandpaper, it feels good, looks like crap..but I use it as a truck gun so its good to go with me..I even considered custom stocking it with all the bells and whistles, but then I wouldn't shoot or use it, it would become a closet queen or I would weaken and sell it.

There is nothing much in the way of affordable rifle fire actions that are worth the trouble to rebarrel. I suspect the best way to a 5MM is buy an old Remington or buy a Contender barrel.

WOW!!! I just sold my 5mm for $300 just because of the buzz the local shop has made of the new ammo.

Good news, I'll dust my old Remington!

Yours would be the Model 592. There were substantially fewer of them built than the 591 (which was clip fed).

I busted out the 591 last Sunday for the first time in a year.
I couldn't take the trigger anymore, so I got busy tearing the trigger mechanism out, which coincidentally preceeded 10 minutes of looking for little pins and springs on the kitchen floor.
All said and done, she did the 1" group @ 100 yds for 3 shots.
That was with the old ammo, can't wait to try the new stuff.
Geez, I love shoting that little rifle.

The little old 5 mag's sure are a riot to play with!!!

Depending on your optics and trigger work.......you may get 1' @ 100 yards with the new stuff. But I'm not going to lay much money on it.

I've not been real impressed, thus far, with the quality of the new Centurion fodder. My 592 wears a 4X scope and has a stock trigger. I can keep 5 on a quarter at 50 yards. I have not shot it seriously at 100 yards yet. But I don't see it going 1".

I've also had about a 5% dud/failure-to-chamber rate on the Centurion ammo. Not too impressive at 40 cents a round.

I'd also like to see a Ballistic Tip sort of bullet instead of the big exposed hollow lead point.
