Just picked up the S&W MP15-22 today. Traded a couple of "impulse" buy 22's for another "impulse" buy 22.

This gun rocks! Once I figured out how to properly load the clip it cycled CCI MM Solid, CCI MM HP, CCI Std Vel, & cheap Fed HP (550 box) with no jams. Only shot today as a plinker/function test with 300+ rounds through it.

Will place a good scope on it and test for accuracy. However my quick shooting with factory sights was very encouraging.

Comes with a 25rd clip. Gotta get more clips!!!! S&W lists a 10rd for restricted states/areas. Going to get one for ammo/accuracy test as the 25rd is bit cumbersome on rest.

Called S&W and ordered 3 additional 25rd clips. Seems the single one empties itself very quickly when I am shooting.

They don't have any in stock but should be getting/finishing them within a week or 2. Very reasonable @ $20.04 ea. With these I only reload every 100rnds. Perfect.

Got the additional magazines from S&W last Fri. That evening me and another fellow shooter out over 300 rounds through it.

Saturday my oldest (16) shot 375+/- and another 100+/- by fellow shooters. Sunday my youngest (13) shot 450+/- and an additional 175+/- by fellow shooters.

Ammo was plain Fed 550 38gHP HV. A couple of jams but we attribute these to my own rigged brass deflector (we pick up brass at our gun club):

Ammo is being consumed at a furious pace but the huge smiles on all shooters face cover these costs well.

22 ARs are fun.

For those that already have an AR, the Spikes dedicated upper is the way to go.

At the very least, all AR owners should have a drop in .22 conversion. MOCokecan at 25 yds. Fun plinker and good to teach folks about AR15s.

Hunting: Exercising dominion over creation at 2800 fps.

Initially the outfit I ordered mine from said it would be a couple weeks. I followed up on this and they said now the factory is telling them the rifle will be shipped ~December 22nd. Apparently the demand has been considerable. And this is one of the largest S&W dealers in the state.

So if you want one and can locate it...do not hesitate.

GOT ONE TODAY. Via a different source a co-worker and I each got one. I'm going to stay in the que for the other one as my soldier-son wants one.

After picking it up I took it to our indoor range and shot it at 25 yards. Fired a total of 100 rounds, 50 rounds of basic Winchester and 50 rounds of basic Federal. Once I figured out the magazine loading drill if functioned flawlessly (you got to pay attention and make sure the rims of the cases are not hung-up on each other on the wrong side....22 rimfire magazine loading 101).

It ejects empties with gusto. All the important 'controls' are just like any other A-R. It's light enough that there is some felt recoil. I fired off-hand and the factory sights were ~dead on at 25 yards. It's becoming evident that this thing comes with a quality barrel. I'm going to mount a detachable red dot sight and also have a regular scope to mount on it as it has plenty of rail to work with.

If you want an "A-R' experience with 1/8th the ammo costs, or a plinker with a lot of quality and 'cool' factor.....this might indeed be it.

UPDATE

Had a shell case rupture that blew the extractor out. S&W customer service did a great job fixing it and threw in two 25-shot magazines for good measure.

This is a fun 25-yard .22. Well made, designed for the .22 cartridge with a quality barrel. All the buttons/controls are the same as an AR-M-4.

Is it built on a lower that will take a 223/5.56 upper?

It's my understanding that no it will not. S&W intentionally made it a smidge smaller so it won't swap out.

Triggers will swap out so you can do any type of trigger upgrade your checkbook will allow. All the exterior stuff fits as the black-gun youngsters at work were coon-fingering mine and trying out their gee-whiz gadgets on it (flashlights, push button lasers, etc.)
