Ok thinking about adding a 22lr Revolver to the safe. Always like the K frame S&W.
A buddy had (if I remember correct) a K-22. Did this get replaced by the Model 17?

Which is better? Or basically the same except for one screw?

Is the 617 simply the M17 in stainless and made a 10rd?

Yes I know I could do a bunch of research but bet some of you have the info on the tip of your tongue.

As usual just my $.02

The K22 was made at a time when hand fitting was the norm. K22's were target pistols with extra attention paid to their manufacture. The M17 is basically the same pistol without the extra work put into the K22. The number of screws attaching the side plate have no effect on the operation of the pistol. The dash numbers after 17 signify manufacturing changes, usually cheaper. If a shooter will satisfy you, they are all good pistols. You will pay more for a K22, some people, myself included, think their worth it. There is also investment potential for a cherry K22 with a box. Be aware that Smith had quality control issues from the 70,s to ? I referred to these guns as preassembled kits. I don't have any experience with the new guns, but have a friend who bought a new M17 and is happy with it. Hope this helps.

Dry firing a 22 on a empty chamber can peen the edge of the chamber. A cheap snap cap is a #6 x 7/8 inch plastic screw anchor.

The 617's are very popular. There is a rare hiccup from the factory now and then, but other than that I don't recall anyone being unhappy with one.

I have a 1980's vintage m17 that is more accurate than my 1990 to 2000's vintage m617, but that's just a sample of one each. I might have just gotten a bit lucky with the m17 and a bit unlucky with the m617. The m617 is still plenty accurate and it's MUCH more forgiving on ammo type than the m17. And when I'm instructing new shooters they like the 10-shot 617 over the "plain" 6-shot m17 every time.

The rancher who taught me how to shoot had a K22 and it shot very well, but I'm sure my m17 is more accurate.
