Eley Pistol ammo problem

Yesterday I tried shooting Eley Pistol Extra through my Ruger MkIII Competition pistol, expecting great results. After all, I shot it with Winchester T22 and was pleased with those results. Was I surprised!

For some reason the Pistol Extra uses Eley's "new" (is it?) bullet design, where the nose is flat and has a little stub sticking out out of the front. The rounds consistently would not feed, they just got hung up on the ramp. Since they were invariably damaged, they would not group worth a damn either.

To top it off, I think I overpaid for it, too, about $10 a box, when Midway offers it for $7.

Anyone else had this problem with this ammo in Ruger 22 pistols?

It doesn't quite fit your situation but in general .22 LR's seem to be pretty fickle. I have a Ruger Mark II that's been tricked out by Volquartsen and it HATES CCI Green Tag (groups all over the place). I've never had another pistol not shoot at least okay with with Green Tag.

I just keep a box of all different brands of ammo available to try in the various guns I check out. It's surprising how often some of the less expensive stuff can be one of the more accurate loads (by field shooting standards).

Guns are ammo sensitive, both rimfires and centerfires. We reload centerfire guns to find the best load, and rimfires are the same, but we can't load for them. With rimfires, testing different brands of ammo, and lots within a brand, is necessary for finding what your particular gun shoots best.
I have a whole shelf loaded with different ammo I use for testing different 22's I have, and for future gun purchases.
That ammo you bought is not the current Eley ammo, as they have gone away from using that bullet you describe, and are now using the regular bullet design like the other manufacturers do.

I took the strange Eley ammo back to the range and shot it through a Ruger 10/22 with a Shilen barrel. One hole groups at 25 yds and fully functioning. Weird. bewildered

I've shot Eley Tenex through a Buckmark and a S&W 41. While they both shot great groups, neither pistol would cycle worth a darn but feeding was not the issue. I know of more than a few Rugers in my bullseye league that all have feeding issues. One MK III won't feed hollow points. CCI SV cures most of them or even Federal 714. These are traditional round nose type bullets.

I've found Aguilla Golden Eagle Target works great in my 41 and my Win 52 B at one fifth the cost of Tenex and has that great Eley primed smell.

The feeding issue is with your pistol... unless the ammo is falling apart while its being fed.

I am back from a long Hiatus... or whatever.
Take care.

I had feeding problems with that same ammo in my tricked out Ruger 10-22's also. It's that bullet design that causes the problem.
