Guys,

Have a new SS 10/22 Ruger rifle and was wondering what this thing might do reasonably well with. Any experience would be appreciated!

Thank you!

Mike, I use CCI Mini-Mag HV solids or HPs in my plain Jane 10/22s. They give reliable function, are clean burning, and provide good accuracy.

Remember ....... the plain Jane Ruger 10/22 is NOT a target rifle. IMHO .... expensive target grade ammo is a waste of money.

Oh, and before all you Ruger 10/22 lovers out there start sending me death threats..... I currently own 3 Ruger 10/22s in various stock barrel versions and I love 'em! Wink

What is a rational expectation of accuracy for a box stock 10/22?

(The last .22 LR rifle I had was an M52D Winchester that I bought for $35 used when a boys school sold off all of its equipment. Needed sights but I had a Redfield international in the drawer at the time. That rifle was wonderful. Wish I had bought two. Went to my middle son who was good enough that he became the captain of the Coast Guard Academy rifle team. He still has that rifle Wink )

My first rifle was the basic 10/22.Of those I've tried it shoots best with Rem Yellow Jackets. You really need to just buy a bunch and see what your rifle likes best.Fortunately most available are reasonably priced.

I have 2, and the only thing that's factory is the receiver. They are the 350 Chevy of Rimfire rifles. I think the 10 Millionth one was made recently but I can't find the press release.
Anyway, the Federal Automatch is shooting great in both of mine as well as everything else I put it in. It's cheap, goes bang, and makes one small ragged hole at 50 yards.
Stock, a 10/22 should be <1" at 50 yards, all day long. Best o' luck

Yesterday I did some shooting with the .22's.Federal Gold and Rem subsonics both shot better through the 10/22 and Savage BV.This was the first time I tried either in the 10/22.

Tried Winchester 1330 fps 40 gr HPs and MiniMag 40 gr HPs yesterday. Both shot to abt 3/4" at 25 yards with a 3-9x scope. Decent. I expect with a decent trigger they'd have done fine.

Which of the relatively inexpensive ( <$125) trigger improvement options are best?

My 18 year old shot a one hole group with it off hand at 20-25yds.
I'm not changing a thing. I put a Bushnell Red Dot scope on it when I got it and I like that for short to medium range work.

Hey Mike, I've had a couple of 10/22s and was able to do a relatively good job on the Trigger Assemblies myself without spending anything except time. Just remove it from the Receiver and look it over real well.

I currently have a real old AMT Lightning(the original 10/22 clone in stainless) and shot it some the last time I went to the range. While I was shooting it, the thought crossed my mind to do a bit of Polishing on it. Then I looked at the groups and figured I couldn't do any better with a Match Grade Trigger Assembly.

However, there is a well thought out set of "Polishing Instructions" for this over on Rimfire Central. Happened across it one day while just checking out the sight and some of their Tips. As well as I can remember, he showed were the rough edges that can create drag are located and which pieces to simply Polish - not Grind!

Might make a nice project for you. Even if you buy Kit Pieces, you still have to take it apart to install them. The worst that can happen is you make it so it won't fire at all(unlikely) or that it goes full-auto Big Grin(also unlikely).

Best of luck to you.

I became frustrated trying to get my 10-22 to shoot as well as others claimed theirs shot. So I rebarreled with a Clark bbl. Best thing I could've done. It shoots great now. PS. I also put a volquartson trigger in it. Also very good. I'm all smiles now.

velocity is like a new car, always losing value.
BC is like diamonds, holding value forever.

On mine the limiting factor was the trigger. I installed a Clark Custom kit, and just about everything shot acceptably---bearing in mind that it is not a target rifle absent significant modifications. If I had to do it over again, I would have spent a little more and gotten the Hornet Products pre-done trigger assembly. Installing the Clark Custom kit took me 2.5 hours. Next time would probably be faster but not having a third thumb was a significant impediment.

I've had about 5-6 of these 10/22's and all of them have been shot in the stock mode only until the new barrel and stock were put on them.

There is a variety of aftermarket stocks and barrels out there and they all seem to improve the accuracy of the gun. If you can clean up the trigger, either yourself or with a kit, you have a gun that you will shot far more than any other shooter in your safe. You might be at or around $400 by the time you get things the way that you want them but with all the shooting and fun you will have with it, it's worth every penny.

Once modified as above, I've found that most of the ones we have had would perform awesome with target grade ammo, in the 2's and 3's at 50 yards and many of the bulk stuff would shoot into the .7-.8's at 70 yards. The fun part is seeing which bulk ammo works best for you.

Hi there,
Mine likes CCI mini-mags for HV and Eley HP's in sub sonic, CCI HP subbies come a close 2nd. Ragged holes for both Mini mags and eley's and the 2nd place CCI's run about 1". If I was to change anything, it would be the barrel, here you can still pick up a Volquartsen but they're not cheap
