Guys,

I have a Rem 597 .22 WMR and a Magnum Research 10/17 Mag. Both have weaver rails. I need a sighting instrument well suited for jackrabbits in sagebrush. As you western boys know, the jacks are fast and dart thorugh the brush, changing angles quickly. I need to get on em fast, but would also like to be able to sight out to 100-150 yards. Alot of times, they'll run a ways and then stop way out there and you need a little magnification to get 'em.

I've tried scopes and open sights. Both really have their limitations. There's got to be something better.
Any advise is appreciated.

fishingA scout mounted 1 1/2 or 2 power scope. Almost like using a shot gun. Hot Core can feed you in with the details. Eekerroger

A good scope is hard to beat.
If it wasnt for the longer ranges,a holosight would be nice. Most have a large reticle for close, fast work. They would cover from 6" to 12" @ 100yds.
I have a red dot scope I have had for years. It work do a good job, too.

I am using a 1.5x4.5x32mm Bushnell Elite 3200 with Firefly Reticle on my 16" AR-15 .223. I use this Rifle for Law Enforcement work as well as calling Coyotes.

At 1.5x this scope has virtually no magnification and a quite large field of view so I have not problems with it qualifying at extreme close range. Yet dialed up to 4.5x I have taken Coyotes to to 200 yards +.

I would call this reticle a TRI Plex Reticle as it has 3 different size wires to it. The center is fine, then the next section is about the thickness of a normal Plex Reticle and the outside 1/3 is really heavy. By simply shining a flashlight in the eye piece lens of the scope for a short period of time illuminates the outter two section of the reticle a soft green.

For my applications I feel this is the best sight for me. I am thinking it may be worth a try for what you are wanting to do also. Others opinions may vary.

Be interesting to see how Leupold's Tactical Prismatic scope would work for that since it's designed for fast target aquisition.

That illuminated reticle looks promising.

I call gray fox at night in the brush and the shots can be pretty fast so I was thinking about trying one of these on a .22 Magnum.

Big GrinYeah, if you go with the "Scout Mount" you can just Duct Tape it on. Big Grin

Actually, I've been looking at a very small Red Dot sight like Reloaderman mentioned. Saw one similar to the Burris "Reflex" sight at a Gun SHow for $70 and almost got it. Weight is right at 1-1.5oz, is adjustable for Point-of-Impact, no magnification and is similar to pointing with a shotgun.

But, I've only used Red Dot sights on Revolvers and they were much larger and heavier. So, I'm not speaking from experience with them on a rifle.

Be sure to use good old never fail "Lead" 22s with whatever you choose and it will do fine.
